Wet Room Bathroom Build in the Houston Metro
Most wet room enquiries start with a shower that is already failing: grout that keeps darkening at the base, a loose tile in the corner, a musty smell, or a damp patch on the hallway side of the wall. The real question is not…

What the work involves
Diagnosis comes first and it is physical. We look at where water is appearing relative to the shower, check the floor for hollow-sounding tile, examine grout and silicone at every change of plane, and inspect the ceiling or wall below on a second-floor bath. If there is access, we look at the underside. Moisture readings on adjacent framing and baseboard help place the source. A shower that leaks only when in use points differently from one that shows staining continuously, which suggests a supply issue rather than the pan.
If the finding is surface level, repair is real work but bounded: cut out and replace failed grout, remove and reset a few tiles into a compatible mortar, renew silicone at all changes of plane, and correct a door sweep or a splash path. If the finding is a failed pan, a missing pre-slope, clogged weep holes, or a membrane penetrated by a later screw, there is no partial fix. The floor assembly comes out and gets rebuilt, and that is the point at which a wet room becomes the sensible thing to build.
What gets specified, and why
If the answer is rebuild, the substrate choice is the real specification. A bonded sheet membrane over foam or cement backer, with a matching bonding-flange drain, gives a continuous waterproof plane at the surface where water actually is. A traditional mortar bed with a pan liner works, but relies on a pre-slope and clear weep holes that are easy to compromise. Liquid membranes are versatile at awkward junctions and depend on achieving film thickness. Whatever the system, the drain and membrane must be from the same approved family. For a repair rather than a rebuild, matching materials matters just as much: a modern polymer-modified mortar behaves differently from a 1970s mud set, and silicone at changes of plane will move where cementitious grout cracks. Choose a hard, low-absorption tile for the floor and accept smaller formats where the slope is compound.
Why the Gulf Coast changes this job
Two local conditions push these decisions. The first is that a slow shower leak in a humid house does not dry out. Framing behind a failing pan stays damp year round, so what would be a nuisance elsewhere becomes rot and microbial growth here, and the longer the diagnosis is deferred the more of the wall is in scope. The second is slab movement. On expansive clay, a floor that has shifted seasonally cracks grout in a straight line and shears tile at the same spot repeatedly. If the crack keeps coming back in the same place after repair, the problem is beneath the tile and repointing it again is money spent twice. In older inner-Houston baths, we also find cast iron drains at the end of their service life during this inspection, which changes the decision on its own.
Where these jobs go wrong
The most common mistake is repeated cosmetic repair on a structural failure. Regrouting a floor that is losing water below the tile buys a few months and hides the evidence in the meantime. The second is opening the wall to find damage and then closing it without addressing the cause, so the same wall comes apart again. Third is converting to a wet room without solving the drainage geometry: a curbless floor with insufficient fall to the drain sends water toward the vanity, which is worse than the shower it replaced. Also common is drilling a grab bar or a shelf through a sound membrane after the fact, which creates the exact failure people were trying to prevent, and mixing waterproofing components across manufacturers, which voids the system and often leaks at the drain flange.
What moves the price
Extent of concealed damage is the biggest unknown and only demo settles it. After that, whether the slab is cut and recessed for a curbless floor or the floor is built up, how far the drain moves, and whether the drain is linear or point. Tile format and layout drive labour. Glass, valve count, and any thermostatic mixing add. In pre-1980 houses, hazardous-material testing and the condition of cast iron drains or galvanised supply lines discovered during demo can shift the figure once work is underway. Second-floor baths add framing work to recess the floor.
How a project runs
We inspect and diagnose before quoting scope, because a repair and a rebuild are different jobs. If it is a rebuild, the sequence is containment, demo, an open look at framing and subfloor, rough plumbing and electrical with inspections, blocking for grab bars and benches, then substrate and slope, waterproofing with banded seams, and a flood test before any tile. Tile and grout follow, glass is templated from finished tile, then fixtures, fan and trim. We show you the failure we found before it is covered up.
Common questions
How do I know if it is the pan or just grout?
Grout is porous and is not the waterproofing, so dark grout alone is not proof of a leak. Signs pointing at the assembly are hollow-sounding floor tile, water appearing only during use, damp at the baseboard on the far side of the wall, and a crack that returns in the same place after repair. Demo confirms it.
Can you convert my existing shower to curbless without cutting the slab?
Sometimes, by building the entire bathroom floor up to meet a new drain height instead of recessing the concrete. That raises the finished floor and has to be resolved at the doorway and against the vanity. On post-tension slabs, building up is often the safer route because the slab is scanned rather than cut. It depends on the room.
Is repair ever the right answer?
Yes, when the waterproofing is intact and the failure is at the surface. Renewing silicone at changes of plane, replacing failed grout with a compatible product, resetting a few tiles, and correcting a splash path are legitimate fixes that last. What repair cannot do is restore a pan with no pre-slope or a membrane that has been penetrated.
