Looking at wet room bathroom build in Houston 77048? That’s around 21 miles from us, well inside the area we work daily.

Wet rooms fail in a small number of predictable ways, and all of them trace back to the floor. Water that does not reach the drain, water that leaves the room, a membrane that stops short of where the water actually goes, a floor that looks flat because it is flat, and a fan that cannot dry any of it. Because the whole floor is the shower, there is no curb to catch a mistake, which is exactly why the detailing has to be right the first time. Here is what goes wrong and what prevents each one.

Scope of work

Insufficient fall. If the floor does not slope enough toward the drain, water pools and never fully dries. Prevention is a pre-sloped tray or a properly graded mortar bed, checked with a straightedge and a bucket of water before waterproofing, and slope maintained through the tile rather than flattened by the setting bed.

Membrane that stops too soon. In a wet room the waterproofing must run the full floor and up the walls beyond the spray zone, with the drain integrated into the membrane. A membrane sized for a conventional shower is the most common serious mistake.

Water escaping the room. Without a curb, the doorway is the weak point. Prevention is a fall that runs away from the door, a threshold detail, and containment with a glass panel.

Undersized drainage. A large linear drain looks impressive but must actually be connected to a line that can carry the flow.

Slippery tile. Prevention is a tile with real wet grip, not a polished surface chosen from a showroom photograph.

Where the budget goes

Prevention concentrates in the floor: pre-sloped substrate or a properly built mortar bed, full-floor bonded waterproofing, crack isolation, and a flood test. Those items are where a wet room bid legitimately exceeds a standard shower bid, and they are also the easiest to leave out quietly.

Drain relocation and slab type sit alongside them, with tendon location required before cutting a post-tension slab.

Then containment, because a glass panel is a real line item, and tile choice, because textured and smaller-format tile costs more to set on a sloped plane.

Ventilation upgrades are minor money with major consequences. Heated floors, benches and second outlets are elective and priced accordingly.

What Houston conditions demand

Local conditions sharpen two of those. The first is drying. At Houston dew points, a wet room with a builder-grade fan will still be damp hours later, and permanently damp grout grows what you would expect. Ventilation is sized for the room and the wet area, ducted outside in insulated duct with a working damper, and ideally on a timer so it runs after you leave.

The second is slab movement. A wet room is a large continuous tiled plane bonded to a slab that moves seasonally on expansive clay. Without crack isolation and planned movement joints, that plane will crack somewhere, and in a wet room the crack is directly over waterproofing you cannot inspect. The membrane should be the thing holding water out, not the tile, but a cracked floor is still a repair nobody wants.

Hard water adds the cosmetic failure: mineral film over a large tiled area and a glass panel. Tile selection and coated glass reduce it.

What we see in Houston

Houston is not one housing stock, so it is not one kind of remodel. In the Heights and Woodland Heights you are often working on 1910s–1930s wood-frame homes on pier-and-beam, where leveling, sill and joist repair, and original wiring long past its service life come before anything cosmetic — and where a home in a designated historic district brings design review with it. Montrose, Oak Forest and Garden Oaks add mid-century layers. Meyerland, Westbury, Braeswood and Sharpstown are largely 1950s–60s slab ranch: cast iron drains near the end of their life, galvanized supply, single-pane windows, popcorn ceilings that should be tested before they are disturbed. Memorial and Alief lean 1970s–80s, which brings aluminum branch wiring and polybutylene supply into the conversation. West of Beltway 8 you are usually in 2000s and 2010s construction, where the job is upgrade rather than repair. Houston has no zoning, but plumbing, electrical and structural work is permitted, and deed restrictions still govern a great deal.

The process

We resolve the floor assembly and drain position first, then the fall and containment on paper.

Demolition, drain work, rough-in, inspections where required. Then the slope is built and checked with a straightedge and water before anything covers it. Full-floor waterproofing goes on, corners and drain integrated, and the room is flood tested overnight.

Tile is set with the slope maintained, movement joints placed at the perimeter and changes of plane, and corners sealed rather than grouted. Glass is templated after tile.

Ventilation is commissioned by measuring that it actually moves air, not by listening to it run.

Common questions

Is a linear drain better than a centre drain?

It allows a single-direction slope, which suits large-format tile and looks cleaner, and it is common in wet rooms for that reason. It is not automatically better. What matters more is that the drain is sized and connected to a line that can carry the flow, that it is integrated into the waterproofing membrane correctly, and that the floor actually falls to it.

Why does water pool on my wet room floor?

Almost always insufficient or uneven fall. It can come from a mortar bed that was floated flat in places, a slope that was correct in the substrate and then flattened by the tile setting bed, or a drain set slightly high relative to the surrounding floor. It is checkable with a level and a small amount of water, and the fix generally means taking up tile.

Will water get out into the hallway?

Not if the floor falls away from the door, the threshold is detailed, and there is containment near the shower head. Problems arise when a wet room is built with a level floor and a drain, no panel, and a doorway on the low side. Those three together push water toward the hall. Each one is a design decision made before construction.
