We handle wet room bathroom build across 77433 in Cypress, roughly 14 miles from our Energy Corridor base.

A wet room is not a shower with the curb removed. It is a bathroom where the whole floor is a waterproofed, drained surface, and that changes the construction rather than the decoration. The floor has to fall correctly, the waterproofing has to be continuous well beyond the shower area, and the drainage has to keep up with everything you install. Done properly it is the most accessible and most open-feeling bathroom you can build. Done as a normal bathroom with a linear drain added, it is a slow leak with good photographs. Here is what is actually involved.

Scope of work

The build starts with the drain and the fall. In a wet room the entire floor slopes toward the drain, or a defined portion does with the remainder falling gently to it. Achieving that on a slab means either recessing the drain area or building the floor up, and the choice affects thresholds at every doorway.

On a slab house the drain relocation is the first hard step, and on a post-tension slab the tendons must be located before any cutting. That single fact decides how a wet room is built in a large share of Houston houses.

Then framing and blocking for any bench, niche, grab bars and glass panel, and rough-in for the valve, head and any secondary outlet.

Sloped substrate goes down next, either a pre-sloped foam tray system or a mortar bed, then a fully bonded waterproofing membrane across the entire floor, up the walls to a defined height, and into every corner. The floor drain is integrated into the membrane, not sealed to it afterwards. Then a flood test overnight.

Tile follows with full mortar coverage, correct slope maintained through the tile, movement joints at the perimeter, and sealant in corners.

What Houston conditions demand

The post-tension slab is the defining Houston constraint on wet rooms. Many houses from the last few decades sit on one, and you cannot simply saw a recess or core a new drain location without locating the tendons first. That is not a reason to avoid a wet room; it is a reason to plan the drain position and the floor build-up early, and sometimes to build the floor up rather than cut it down.

Humidity is the second. A wet room puts a large wet surface in a room that has to dry between uses, and at our dew points a bathroom with a weak fan simply stays damp. Ventilation is sized for the room and ducted outside in insulated duct, not into the attic.

Hard water is the third, and it lands on the glass panel and the floor tile. Mineral film on a large tiled floor is more visible than in a small pan, so tile selection and a coated glass panel matter.

Where a house has flood history, a fully tiled, fully waterproofed floor is one of the better assemblies you can have.

Cypress homes and this work

Cypress is mostly unincorporated northwest Harris County, and the housing reflects a building push that ran from the 1990s straight through the 2010s. Post-tension slab, brick across the front, two stories, a tall entry, a garden tub the family stopped using years ago, and cabinet boxes that are particleboard behind a solid door. That last detail matters in this climate: particleboard swells if a supply line weeps or a dishwasher leaks, and it does not come back. When we rebuild a kitchen here we move to plywood boxes. The rest of the pattern is predictable and fixable — builder carpet, a wall between the kitchen and family room that no longer makes sense, a formal dining room nobody eats in. These are newer homes, but they sit on the same expansive clay as everything else, so substrate flatness and movement joints still decide whether your tile looks right in year five. Most neighborhoods have deed restrictions and architectural review for exterior changes.

Where the budget goes

The drain is the first driver. Relocating it in a slab, with tendon location on post-tension construction, is skilled work and it sets the tone for the budget.

Floor build-up is the second. If the floor must be raised to achieve fall, every doorway, threshold and the vanity height are affected, and that ripples into the rest of the room.

Waterproofing scope is genuinely larger than a standard shower, because the membrane covers the whole floor and more wall area. That is materials and labour both.

Then tile: smaller formats or textured tile are usual on a sloping floor for grip and to follow the fall, and smaller tile is more labour.

Glass panels, benches, niches, heated floors and a second shower outlet each add. Ventilation sizing is a small line with a large effect.

The process

Design comes first, with drain position, fall direction, threshold heights and door swings resolved on paper. If the slab is post-tension, tendon location happens before any cutting is scheduled.

Then demolition, drain work, rough-in, inspections where the jurisdiction requires them, sloped substrate, full-floor bonded waterproofing, and an overnight flood test you are welcome to see.

Tile follows, then glass templated after tile, then fittings, ventilation commissioning and finishes.

The two checkpoints worth attending are the slope check before waterproofing, when a straightedge and a bucket of water tell the truth, and the pre-tile membrane inspection.

Common questions

Is a wet room harder to keep clean?

It is different rather than harder. There is no curb to scrub and no pan corner to grow mildew in, which helps. Against that, more floor area gets wet, so grout and tile selection matters, and hard water film is more visible across a large floor. Good ventilation and a squeegee or a quick wipe of the glass handle most of it.

Will the whole bathroom floor get wet?

Some of it will, and the design decides how much. Most wet rooms use a glass panel or a considered layout to contain the main spray, with the rest of the floor waterproofed and falling gently to the drain as insurance rather than as a daily soaking. If you want a completely dry zone by the vanity, that is a layout and containment discussion at design stage.

Can a wet room be built on a post-tension slab?

Yes, but the tendons have to be located before anything is cut, and that shapes where the drain can go. In some houses the more sensible route is building the floor up to achieve fall rather than recessing the slab. Either way it is a planning decision made early, not something to discover on demolition day.
