Refacing quotes vary more than people expect, and the variation is not padding. It reflects genuinely different material systems on the frames, different door construction, and whether the moving parts of the kitchen get replaced along with the surfaces you can see. A rigid thermofoil reface and a wood-veneer reface with new dovetailed drawer boxes are both refacing, and they will not age the same way in a humid climate. Here is what separates the tiers, what each buys, and which upgrades are worth the money in Houston specifically.

Local building realities

Tier choice interacts with local conditions in one place above all: the dishwasher end panel and the cabinet fronts nearest it. Repeated venting of warm moist air is what lifts thermofoil edges and delaminates cheaper laminate, which is why the budget tier tends to show its age there first regardless of how the rest of the run looks. Hard water spotting on fronts beside the sink also reads differently by material, since a matte laminate hides mineral haze better than a gloss thermofoil. Slab movement in post-1985 western-suburb homes argues for the frame correction included at the higher tiers, because uniform new reveals make racking obvious. Humidity affects installation too: adhesives need controlled indoor conditions, so the air handler runs and windows stay shut. And in flood-exposed parts of the metro, spending up on doors while leaving an already-swollen toe kick and box bottom untouched inverts the priorities.

How the job is built

A budget specification skins the face frames and exposed ends with a rigid thermofoil or laminate, fits new thermofoil or laminate doors and drawer fronts, replaces hinges, and reuses the existing drawer boxes and slides. It changes the look completely and leaves the mechanics as they were. A mid specification uses a wood veneer or a higher-grade laminate on the frames, painted MDF or five-piece hardwood doors, concealed soft-close hinges throughout, and new full-extension undermount slides with the existing drawer boxes retained or replaced selectively. A high specification adds new dovetailed drawer boxes across the kitchen, refinished or relined interiors, upgraded end panels in a more durable material at the dishwasher, matched crown and light rail, glass or specialty doors where wanted, and correction work on racked frames so factory reveals sit true. Each tier assumes sound boxes underneath, because none of them fixes a water-damaged carcase.

Products and materials

Frame skins run from rigid thermofoil and standard laminate at the budget end, through higher-pressure laminates, to pressure-sensitive wood veneer that can be stained to match new hardwood doors. Veneer looks best and is the least forgiving of a poorly prepared substrate. Doors run from thermofoil over MDF, to painted MDF, to five-piece hardwood or slab plywood with a factory finish. Thermofoil is inexpensive and easy to clean, but its film is heat-bonded and heat is exactly what a dishwasher and a range produce. Painted MDF gives a clean modern look and is stable in humidity, though it dents. Hardwood moves seasonally, which shows at painted five-piece joints as fine lines. Hardware is where the tiers separate practically: reused slides feel identical to before, while undermount full-extension slides and soft-close hinges change daily use more than any surface does. New dovetailed drawer boxes matter where existing boxes have stapled bottoms already sagging.

Cost factors

Opening count sets the baseline, then door material and construction. Frame skin material moves the price meaningfully, with wood veneer above laminate and thermofoil. Drawer box replacement and slide upgrades are among the largest optional items and among the most noticeable. Exposed end panels, island backs, glass doors, crown and light rail each add. Matching a stain across veneer and new hardwood costs more than a painted specification. Frame correction, sink base repair, and interior refinishing are found during assessment and priced then. Access and layout complexity matter, as do specialty items like appliance panels. Electrical additions go to a licensed trade under Houston’s permitting requirements.

Working in Houston

Houston is not one housing stock, so it is not one kind of remodel. In the Heights and Woodland Heights you are often working on 1910s–1930s wood-frame homes on pier-and-beam, where leveling, sill and joist repair, and original wiring long past its service life come before anything cosmetic — and where a home in a designated historic district brings design review with it. Montrose, Oak Forest and Garden Oaks add mid-century layers. Meyerland, Westbury, Braeswood and Sharpstown are largely 1950s–60s slab ranch: cast iron drains near the end of their life, galvanized supply, single-pane windows, popcorn ceilings that should be tested before they are disturbed. Memorial and Alief lean 1970s–80s, which brings aluminum branch wiring and polybutylene supply into the conversation. West of Beltway 8 you are usually in 2000s and 2010s construction, where the job is upgrade rather than repair. Houston has no zoning, but plumbing, electrical and structural work is permitted, and deed restrictions still govern a great deal.

What to watch for

The common tier mistake is spending on doors and reusing worn drawer mechanics, so a kitchen that looks new still sticks and rattles every day. The second is choosing thermofoil throughout and putting it next to a dishwasher and a range without accepting where it will fail first. Third, buying wood veneer frames without paying for the surface preparation veneer demands, since old finish, cooking residue or sanding dust will defeat the adhesive regardless of veneer quality. Fourth, skipping frame correction at any tier and then blaming door quality for uneven reveals. Fifth, leaving interiors untouched behind high-specification doors, so every opening reveals the old kitchen. Sixth, mixing tiers within one visible run, where a budget end panel sits beside mid-tier doors. Seventh, spending up on the kitchen while a leaking supply line under the sink continues quietly wetting the box that everything is fastened to.

How a project runs

Assessment confirms the boxes can carry any tier at all, then the specification is set item by item rather than as a single label, so you can see where money goes. Openings are measured individually and doors ordered. Frames are prepped, repaired and corrected while lead times run. Skins are applied, hardware fitted, doors hung and adjusted, drawer boxes and slides installed where specified, then toe kicks and trim. Adjustment for even reveals is part of the work, not a callback. If you want the three specifications priced against your actual kitchen so the trade-offs are concrete, call (281) 235-6971.

Common questions

Is thermofoil a bad choice or just a cheaper one?

It is a fair choice in the right places. The film is heat-bonded to an MDF core, so it cleans easily and costs less, but heat and steam work at that bond over time. The doors nearest the dishwasher and range are where that shows. Using a more durable material at those specific positions is a sensible compromise rather than replacing the whole specification.

Are new drawer boxes and slides worth the upgrade?

They change daily use more than the doors do. Full-extension undermount slides let you reach the back of every drawer, and soft-close hardware removes the slamming that wears frames. If existing boxes have stapled bottoms that already sag or racked corners, replacing them is the difference between a kitchen that looks new and one that also works like it.

Should interiors be refinished as well?

It depends on what they look like now. Melamine interiors in good condition can stay as they are without spoiling the result. Stained wood interiors behind new painted doors are noticeable every time a door opens. Refinishing or relining is an optional item that is easiest to do while the doors are off, and considerably harder to add later.
