Bench Seat Shower Build in the Houston Metro

A shower bench is the same seat in both houses and almost never the same job. In a 1968 ranch inside the Loop, the bench is the small part; the work is whatever shows up when the old pan comes out — a corroded cast iron drain…

In short

In the older house we open the walls before committing to a firm scope. Tile and pan come out to the studs and the slab, the drain body is exposed and inspected, and the supply is traced back to a point where it can be tied in cleanly. Rotted bottom plate, soft sheathing, and corroded drain flanges…

What the work involves

In the older house we open the walls before committing to a firm scope. Tile and pan come out to the studs and the slab, the drain body is exposed and inspected, and the supply is traced back to a point where it can be tied in cleanly. Rotted bottom plate, soft sheathing, and corroded drain flanges get dealt with first. Then blocking goes in — solid 2x lumber between studs where the bench lands and where a grab bar might go later — followed by the bench framing or a foam bench form, backer board or foam panel, waterproofing, a flood test, tile, grout, and glass.

In the newer house the front half of that compresses. The insert comes out in pieces, the studs are usually sound, the drain is PVC. The bench still needs blocking added, because production framing rarely includes it. What changes is anchoring: nothing gets fastened into a post-tension slab, so the bench either bears on the slab and ties into wall framing, or a pre-sloped foam bench is bonded in thinset with no penetrations at all. Waterproofing, slope, flood test, and change-of-plane joints run identically in both.

What gets specified, and why

Three bench types cover most of this work. A masonry bench — block or brick bedded on the slab and mud-floated — is the heaviest and the most tolerant of a genuinely wet room, and it is what to build when the shower is large or a curbless entry puts the seat in the splash path. A framed bench, kiln-dried 2x lumber sheathed in cement backer board, is faster and perfectly sound when it sits fully inside a bonded waterproofing envelope. Pre-sloped extruded polystyrene bench forms are the cleanest fit over post-tension slabs, because they set in thinset with no anchors.

Never plywood, never OSB, never particleboard inside the wet zone. In this humidity, a leak a cement board bench shrugs off will swell a wood core and lift the tile off it. For tops, porcelain and dense granite hold up well. Honed marble looks right for a year and then etches under acidic cleaners and shows hard-water scale quickly. If someone wants marble anyway, it wants a penetrating sealer and a maintenance conversation up front rather than a complaint later.

Why the Gulf Coast changes this job

Both houses sit on expansive clay and both move. In the older stock the movement has had decades to work, and you will often find a hairline slab crack running under the old pan. Bond new tile straight over that and the crack telegraphs through the floor within a season or two. A crack isolation layer under the shower floor, or a full bonded sheet assembly, is what stops it.

In the newer western-suburb builds the slab is usually post-tension, which changes what may be cut and drilled at all. Tendons run in bands and are under load, so any anchor, and certainly any saw cut for a recessed linear drain, wants a scan first and, for a cut, engineering involvement. Humidity is the shared enemy. Houston showers dry slowly, so the bench top has to shed water instead of holding it, and the room needs exhaust that actually moves air outside the roofline rather than dumping it into the attic.

Where these jobs go wrong

The most common failure in older bathrooms is a bench built on top of a traditional pan liner with fasteners driven through it. Every screw is a hole below the water line, and it will not announce itself for a year. If a liner is in play, the bench is built inside it or set on it without penetration — and increasingly we skip the liner entirely for a bonded membrane so there is no hidden reservoir at all.

Second, a flat bench top. Water stands, grout darkens, and salts wick out of the setting bed as efflorescence at the front edge. The top wants a slight fall back toward the shower floor. Third, hard grout in every joint: bench-to-wall and top-to-face are changes of plane, they move, and they get flexible sealant or they crack in a line. Fourth, in newer homes, an anchor fired blind into a post-tension slab — scan first. Fifth, skipping the flood test to save a day. That test is the only cheap opportunity to find a leak.

What moves the price

Age of the plumbing is the biggest swing. A drain body corroded at the flange, a tub-sized line that needs opening up, or galvanised supply that pinholes the moment it is disturbed all turn a finish job into a plumbing job with a slab involved. Bench type is next: a masonry bench with a mud-floated top is considerably more labour than a bonded foam form. Tile format drives it too — mosaic on a sloped seat is slow, and a mitred large-format top is slow in a different way, with a fabricator involved. Curbless entry is its own line, because on slab-on-grade it means recessing concrete or building the entire bathroom floor up. Steam adds a vapour-tight assembly and a sloped ceiling. Frameless glass, niche work, and grab-bar blocking are smaller adders that accumulate.

How a project runs

We start by looking at what sits behind the tile, because in a house of a certain age that determines everything downstream. Demolition is contained and debris goes out the shortest route. With the walls open, the plumber sets drain and valve, we add blocking, and anything hidden or structural is photographed before it is covered. Waterproofing follows and gets flood tested before a single tile is set. Then tile, cure, grout, sealant at the moving joints, and glass measured off finished tile rather than off framing. Permitting depends on the address — the City of Houston and the unincorporated county areas handle plumbing work differently, and we confirm which applies to your street before the drain is touched. Common questions

Can a bench be added to an existing shower without redoing the tile?

Rarely well. A masonry or framed bench has to tie into the waterproofing behind the tile, and there is no way to reach that without opening the wall and floor at the corner where it lands. What can genuinely be added to a finished shower is a wall-mounted fold-down teak or phenolic seat, provided there is solid blocking behind the tile. In most homes there isn’t, which is its own opening.

How high and how deep should the seat be?

Finished heights in the high teens read comfortably to most adults, with a depth in the mid-teens so you can actually sit back rather than perch. That is finished height, measured after tile and after the shower floor slope, which is why it gets set on site rather than on paper. If aging in place is part of the thinking, we block for a grab bar during framing even when none is going in yet.

My 1970s bathroom has a popcorn ceiling. Does that affect the shower?

It can affect the schedule. Ceiling texture from that era may contain asbestos, and disturbing it — for a new exhaust fan, a can light, or just demolition dust — is what triggers testing. Sampling is cheap relative to the risk and happens before anything overhead is opened. If it comes back clean, work proceeds normally. If it doesn’t, abatement goes to a licensed abatement contractor first.

Why does a tub-to-shower conversion often mean opening the slab?

A tub drains through a smaller line than a shower generally wants, so converting one to the other in an older house frequently means enlarging and resetting the drain, which is under concrete. That single detail is what most often turns a straightforward conversion into a bigger job, and it is worth confirming before you fall in love with a tile. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, so the local plumbing inspector’s read governs.
