MS MS Home RemodelingHOUSTON METRO

We handle bench seat shower build across 77406 in Richmond, roughly 12 miles from our Energy Corridor base.

The words “add a shower bench” mean two very different jobs depending on which side of the metro your house sits on. In a 1960s or 70s home inside the Loop or in Spring Branch, a bench usually arrives as part of converting a small tub alcove into a walk-in shower, and the job runs into cast iron, mortar-bed floors, and framing that has been modified at least once. In a 2005 Katy or Cypress build, the bench usually goes into an existing garden-tub-plus-shower layout with a fiberglass or thin-set pan and modern plumbing. Same finished product, different path to it.

What we see in Richmond

Richmond is the Fort Bend County seat, and a Richmond address covers two very different building situations. Near the historic core there are genuinely old homes — late-1800s and early-1900s wood-frame on pier-and-beam — where the work starts underneath: sill plates, joists, subfloor, leveling, and usually a full rethink of electrical and plumbing before anything gets finished. Properties in a historic district can carry additional review. Then there is everything built under a Richmond address since the 2000s: subdivisions west and north of town on post-tension slabs, where the structure is sound and the ask is a better kitchen, a real primary shower, or opening up a closed plan. Those two are different crews and different budgets. What they share is the ground — expansive clay that moves seasonally, which reaches a pier-and-beam house through its piers and a slab house through the slab itself. Permitting depends on city limits versus unincorporated county.

What we actually do

In the older stock, the sequence starts with demolition that reveals things. Tub alcoves from that era often sit on a mud bed over the slab, and the drain is cast iron with a lead bend. Converting to a walk-in with a bench means the drain location and the pan build both get reconsidered, and the framing usually needs correcting — studs cut for old plumbing, no blocking anywhere useful, and sometimes a wall that has moved with the slab enough to be visibly out of plumb. Bench framing has to tie into sound structure, so blocking and sistering happen before anything decorative.

In newer homes the shower is generally larger already and the plumbing is PVC with a modern trap, so the bench is a cleaner addition. The common issue there is different: the original shower was built with a prefabricated pan or a minimal mortar bed and a thin waterproofing layer, and adding a bench means the whole pan-to-wall waterproofing gets rebuilt properly rather than tied into whatever was there.

Both paths converge at the same point — a continuously waterproofed bench, a pitched seat, banded corners, and tile laid to the room’s layout. What differs is how much has to be corrected before that work can begin.

Why this is different on the Gulf Coast

The older-home version runs into slab history. Houses built on expansive clay in the 60s through 80s have had decades of seasonal movement, and by now some have had foundation work. In a shower, that shows up as a wall that is out of plumb, a floor that is out of level, and existing tile with a diagonal crack. A bench built tight into two walls in that condition needs its corners detailed with movement in mind — reinforcing band and silicone, never rigid grout in the corner.

The newer-home version runs into humidity and ventilation more than structure. Large primary baths in 2000s suburban builds frequently got an undersized exhaust fan for the volume of the room. Add a bench, which is a permanently damp horizontal surface, and the room’s drying capacity becomes the limiting factor. It is worth pricing the fan alongside the tile.

Both run into hard water. The seat is the surface where scale accumulates fastest, which is why we steer people away from honed marble tops here and toward quartz, granite, or large-format porcelain that tolerates a descaling cleaner without going dull.

Homes in parts of the metro with flood history often specify tile throughout and a solid masonry bench with no cavity, which is a reasonable preference.

What to expect

We look at the house first and ask its age, because that predicts what the demolition will find better than anything else. In older homes we plan for discovery and tell you where the likely surprises are before starting: drain material, framing condition, and whether the walls are plumb.

Demo, then an honest assessment with you standing there. Framing corrections and blocking. Bench construction. Pan and bench waterproofed as one system, with the seat pitch built into the substrate. Cure time. Tile laid to the room’s layout, seat set as a slab where possible, corners siliconed. Plumbing trim, glass template afterward if frameless glass is part of it.

If your house is from the cast iron era and you want to know what is actually under the bathroom before committing to a design, that is a reasonable first conversation to have — (281) 235-6971.

What moves the price

In older homes, the unknowns behind the wall are the cost. Cast iron drain lines that are scaled or bellied, a drain that needs relocating for a curbless or larger footprint, framing that has to be corrected, and the occasional discovery that a previous remodel left something undone. None of that is bench work, but all of it can attach to a bench project once the wall is open.

In newer homes the cost is usually the shower rebuild that the bench triggers. If the existing pan and waterproofing are not something a bench can be tied into, the honest scope is a new pan, not a bench bolted onto old work.

Common to both: bench type (foam, masonry, framed-and-filled, or floating with concealed structure), size and geometry, seat material, and whether grab bar blocking and a handheld are being added at the same time — which is usually the right time to do it. Costs across those variables typically fall in a wide range, which is why the number comes after we see the shower.

Common questions

Should we add grab bars while we are at it?

If it is on your mind at all, add the blocking now even if you skip the bars. Solid blocking behind the tile costs very little while the wall is open and nothing while it is closed — it becomes a demolition job later. You can install actual bars whenever you want them, and modern ones do not read as institutional.

My house is from 1972. Will the cast iron drain have to be replaced?

Not automatically. Cast iron from that era can still be serviceable or it can be heavily scaled and bellied. It is worth looking rather than assuming either way — a camera inspection while the floor is open costs far less than discovering the answer after new tile is set. If it does need work, doing it during an open-floor shower remodel is the cheapest time it will ever be.

Our Katy home already has a big shower. Is adding a bench simple?

Simpler than in an older house, but it still depends on how the existing pan was built. A bench has to be waterproofed continuously with the pan and walls, so if the existing waterproofing cannot be integrated, the pan gets rebuilt. That is the honest scope. Bolting a bench onto an old pan and tiling over the junction is how slow leaks start.

Can we do a curbless shower with a bench in a slab-on-grade house?

Sometimes. Curbless on a slab requires the drain and the recess to be workable, which usually means either cutting and lowering the slab in the shower footprint or raising the surrounding bathroom floor. Both are real work with real cost. It is a good conversation to have early, because the answer changes the whole design, and it is not always yes.
