Houston 77048 sits about 21 miles from our shop, and kitchen lighting installation is work we do there regularly.

Kitchen lighting is the cheapest change with the largest effect, and it is also where the most guesswork happens. A room lit by four cans in the middle of the ceiling puts your own shadow on the counter you are working at. Fixing that is a layout problem before it is a fixture problem. Below is what actually happens on a kitchen lighting job, from working out where light needs to land to the last dimmer being paired, including the parts of the work that happen in a Houston attic in August and the reasons some of it is not do-it-yourself territory.

Why this is different on the Gulf Coast

Most of a Houston kitchen lighting job happens above an insulated ceiling with an attic that runs well over a hundred degrees for months. That has practical consequences. Fixtures must be rated correctly for contact with insulation where insulation is present, and drivers and transformers live longer when they are not buried in the hottest part of the attic. Where there is a choice, mounting a driver in a serviceable location instead of an inaccessible one saves a future ceiling repair.

Air sealing matters here too. Every recessed can is a hole between conditioned space and a hot, humid attic. Sealed housings keep humid attic air from being drawn into the kitchen, which is both a comfort and a condensation issue in our climate.

In older inner-Houston kitchens, opening a ceiling for lighting is also when you find out about the wiring era the house belongs to, including aluminium branch circuits. That is a licensed electrician’s call. And if the ceiling is popcorn from that period, it gets tested before anyone disturbs it.

What we actually do

Design comes first, on paper. Light gets planned in layers: task light on the work surfaces, general light for the room, and accent light for anything you want seen. Recessed fixtures are positioned relative to the front edge of the counter rather than centred in the ceiling, so the beam lands on the work surface instead of on your back.

Then circuiting. We check what exists, what the panel has available, and whether new circuits or switch legs are needed. Older kitchens frequently need more than a swap.

Rough-in follows: fixtures located, ceiling opened where needed, cable run, boxes set, switch locations decided by how you walk into the room rather than where the old ones were. Undercabinet wiring is chased out through the wall or the cabinet back and terminated in a proper junction.

Then fixtures, trims, pendants hung at a height checked against the actual island, and undercabinet strips or pucks mounted to the front of the cabinet bottom so the light hits the counter, not the backsplash.

Finally control: dimmers matched to the drivers, scenes set, and everything tested at low output where flicker shows up.

Choosing materials

For general light, the durable choice is a housing that stays and a light module that can be swapped, rather than a sealed fixture where a failed driver means opening the ceiling. Airtight IC-rated housings with replaceable trims sit at the reliable end. Canless wafer lights are quick and shallow, which matters under a second floor, but their driver lives in an attic junction box and the whole unit is usually replaced when it fails. Under-cabinet, linear LED strips or bars with a remote driver mounted in an accessible cabinet outlast puck lights and give even coverage without hotspots on a polished countertop. Colour specification matters more than brand: pick one colour temperature for the whole kitchen, commonly warm-white, and fixtures with high colour rendering so food looks right. Over a sink, damp-location-rated fixtures are the right call in this humidity. Dimmers must be matched to the driver type, forward or reverse phase, or you get flicker and buzz regardless of quality.

What moves the price

The number of fixtures matters less than the number of new circuits and switch legs. Adding a layer that needs its own control, or splitting undercabinet from ceiling, means more wire and more work in the panel.

Ceiling access is the next factor. An accessible attic above a flat ceiling is straightforward. A second floor above, a vaulted ceiling, or a plaster ceiling all add work, and a vault often means the fixture type has to change entirely.

Fixture choice moves the number in both directions. Undercabinet linear systems, integrated LED trims and quality drivers cost more upfront and flicker less on dimmers. Cheap drivers are the usual reason a new kitchen buzzes at low light.

Then patching and paint after any ceiling work, plus the pendants themselves, which have no ceiling.

Houston housing stock

Houston is not one housing stock, so it is not one kind of remodel. In the Heights and Woodland Heights you are often working on 1910s–1930s wood-frame homes on pier-and-beam, where leveling, sill and joist repair, and original wiring long past its service life come before anything cosmetic — and where a home in a designated historic district brings design review with it. Montrose, Oak Forest and Garden Oaks add mid-century layers. Meyerland, Westbury, Braeswood and Sharpstown are largely 1950s–60s slab ranch: cast iron drains near the end of their life, galvanized supply, single-pane windows, popcorn ceilings that should be tested before they are disturbed. Memorial and Alief lean 1970s–80s, which brings aluminum branch wiring and polybutylene supply into the conversation. West of Beltway 8 you are usually in 2000s and 2010s construction, where the job is upgrade rather than repair. Houston has no zoning, but plumbing, electrical and structural work is permitted, and deed restrictions still govern a great deal.

Where these jobs fail

The characteristic entry-tier error is more light instead of better-placed light. Adding fixtures on the same central grid leaves the cook shadowing their own counter. Move light forward, roughly two feet off the wall face, and the same wattage works better. Second is buying fixtures and dimmers separately, which produces flicker, buzz and dead spots at the bottom of the dimming range. Mid tier fails when everything is put on one switch, so accent and task light cannot be used independently and the kitchen has exactly one setting. High tier fails through complexity: a control system nobody in the household can operate, or colour-tunable fixtures set to different temperatures on different circuits. It also fails through mounting strips without diffusers under uppers, so a row of dots reflects across a polished countertop. Across all tiers, running under-cabinet wiring after the backsplash is installed means opening finished tile. Do that wiring before the splash.

What to expect

We start in your kitchen, at the counter, looking at where your shadow falls now. That conversation produces a reflected ceiling plan showing fixture locations, beam intent and switching.

Once you sign off, the electrical work is scheduled and permits pulled where the jurisdiction requires them for new circuits.

Rough-in, then inspection where applicable, then close-up, patch and paint, then fixtures, trims and pendants. Undercabinet is installed after the cabinets are final so the fixture sits where it needs to.

The last step is dimming. Every driver and dimmer pairing gets tested at the bottom of the range, because that is where mismatches show. Scenes are set with you standing there rather than programmed in the truck.

Common questions

Do I need a permit to add kitchen lighting?

It depends on the scope and where you live. Swapping a fixture is different from adding circuits, and the City of Houston, unincorporated Harris County and Fort Bend all handle electrical permitting differently. Anything involving new circuits should be done by a licensed electrician and permitted where required. We tell you what your specific job needs before it starts.

Why does my kitchen feel dark with six recessed lights?

Almost always placement rather than quantity. Cans centred in the ceiling put light on the floor and your body between the light and the counter, so you work in your own shadow. Moving the line of fixtures toward the front edge of the counters, adding undercabinet light where the real work happens, and choosing the right beam angle fixes it without adding more holes.

What colour temperature should I use?

Pick one and use it everywhere in the room. Mixed colour temperatures are what make a kitchen look unresolved. Warmer light suits kitchens that open onto living space; a slightly cooler light reads crisper for task work. What matters more than the number is colour rendering quality, because poor rendering makes food and stone counters look wrong regardless of temperature.
