Before choosing a system, it is worth deciding whether to do this at all. Houston is not Minneapolis, and a heated floor here earns its keep for different reasons than it does up north. Once you have decided yes, the choices are narrower than the marketing suggests: three ways to hold the cable, two voltages, one kind of thermostat that is actually correct, and a coverage decision that people routinely get wrong by trying to heat too much. What follows is the comparison we walk clients through, including the case for spending the money elsewhere if the floor is not really the problem.

What the work involves

Three delivery methods. A pre-spaced mat unrolls and is the fastest and cheapest to install, but it is inflexible around odd shapes. Loose cable on strapping lets the installer choose spacing and work around a vanity or a curved wall, at more labour. A dimpled uncoupling membrane holds cable in channels and does two jobs at once — heat delivery plus the crack isolation a Gulf Coast slab wants — which makes its higher unit cost less lopsided than it looks.

Voltage follows area. Small bathrooms usually run 120 volts; past a certain heated area the amperage argues for 240. Your electrician calculates that from the system’s watts per square foot, not from a rule of thumb.

Thermostats: always specify a model with a floor sensor, not one that reads air temperature alone. A floor-sensing thermostat protects the tile assembly and gives you what you actually want, which is a surface temperature. Programmable is the minimum; connected models add convenience, not performance.

Coverage is the decision people fumble. Heat the walking paths and the area in front of the vanity and shower. Skip under the toilet, under a tub and under fixed cabinetry.

Finally, floor covering compatibility: most tile and stone are fine, and many vinyl plank products carry a maximum surface temperature that has to be honoured.

What goes wrong, and how it is avoided

Losing the documentation. Without the layout photographs, the ohm log and the model information, any future work becomes exploratory. Not labelling the breaker, so the circuit gets switched off during another project and nobody knows what it fed. Driving fasteners into the floor later for a transition strip, a shoe moulding, a toilet flange repair or a new base cabinet, which is the most common cause of a genuine cable failure. Leaving a thick bath mat sitting permanently over the sensor location, which makes the thermostat read warmer than the room and under heat everything else. Letting grout open at the shower curb and ignoring it. And running the system continuously, which wears the thermostat and gains nothing over a schedule.

What drives the cost

Heated area drives material directly, and heated area is a design choice — deciding not to heat under the tub and toilet reduces cost and improves performance at the same time.

System type is the next lever, and the membrane option is the one whose true cost is most often misread. Comparing it against a bare mat looks unfavourable until you remember a Houston slab needs an uncoupling layer regardless, at which point the two are closer than the line items suggest.

Electrical dominates when the panel is the problem. A house with an available breaker slot and an easy cable path is a modest add. A full panel in an older house, or a long run from a distant panel, is a different order of work, with permitting and inspection where the jurisdiction requires it.

Thermostat class is a small but real line. So is the consequence of added floor height: door undercut, thresholds, transition pieces.

Operating cost depends on connected wattage, heated area and hours per day. Your electrician can give you the load; your utility rate does the rest. Anyone quoting you a monthly figure without those inputs is inventing it.

Materials and specification

Mats are cheaper and faster and only make sense in simple rectangular rooms, since they cannot be cut to length. Loose cable in a membrane costs more, fits real bathrooms with jogs and doorways, and adds movement accommodation over clay. Underlayment options run from thin cork or foam sheet to rigid insulated backer board; the thicker the better for response, traded against added floor height that has to be handled at the door undercut, transitions and the toilet flange. Thermostats are the shortest lived component regardless of tier. Sensors come in different resistance values, so a future replacement thermostat must match or be selectable. Tile and stone are ideal above the element; engineered wood and vinyl plank carry a manufacturer surface temperature limit and have to be checked before they go over heat.

Building for Gulf Coast conditions

The honest Houston case for floor warming rests on slab-on-grade construction, not on the weather report. A slab sits on ground that stays cool nearly all year, and tile over that slab is cold on bare feet in November and also in April. That is the complaint this fixes. If your bathroom is over a conditioned space upstairs, the case is weaker and we will say so.

The second local benefit is moisture. A floor held slightly above room temperature dries after a shower rather than staying damp, which matters in a house that runs high indoor humidity for most of the year. It is not a substitute for exhaust. If your fan is undersized, unducted or vents into the attic, fixing that will do more for how the room feels than any heat in the floor, and it costs less. We would rather point that out than sell the wrong thing.

On post-tension slabs in the newer western suburbs, everything here is bonded rather than fastened, so the constraint changes nothing about system choice. In flood-affected areas, thermostat and junction placement gets raised deliberately.

Katy homes and this work

Katy covers a lot of ground. Parts sit in Harris County, parts in Fort Bend, parts in Waller, and only some addresses are actually inside the City of Katy — which affects who permits and inspects the work. The housing runs from late-1970s and 1980s neighborhoods through the master-planned build-out of the 1990s and 2000s and on into current construction. In the 80s and 90s homes we see oak cabinets, laminate counters, a garden tub with a narrow shower beside it, formal rooms nobody uses, and enough polybutylene supply piping that it is worth confirming before you commit to a bathroom. Homes that have taken water at some point come with different priorities: tile or a quality LVP instead of wood, outlets set higher than standard, closed-cell foam in place of batt. The clay moves here, so substrate flatness and movement joints get the same attention as the tile selection. Most neighborhoods have HOA architectural review.

How we work

We start by asking what problem you are solving. Cold tile underfoot on a slab is the right problem for this product. A room that feels damp, or one that never warms up, may point at the exhaust fan or the HVAC supply instead, and those get checked first.

If floor warming is the answer, we measure the room, draw the heated area with fixtures marked, and pick the delivery method against that shape — mat for simple rectangles, cable or membrane for anything with obstacles.

The electrician confirms panel capacity and voltage before ordering, since that determines the system part number.

Installation happens inside the tile job, with resistance readings recorded at each stage and the sensor sleeved for future replacement. Commissioning is a slow first warm-up, then we set the schedule with you and explain why leaving it on a programme beats switching it on when the floor already feels cold.

Common questions

Can I put luxury vinyl plank over it instead of tile?

Sometimes, but check the flooring manufacturer's maximum surface temperature before committing, and check that the heat system's instructions allow it. Many vinyl plank products publish a temperature limit, and exceeding it can cause gapping or dimensional change. Tile and stone are the straightforward pairing. If you are set on vinyl plank, we get both manufacturers' written instructions in hand before ordering anything.

Is a heated floor worth it in a climate like Houston's?

For some bathrooms, genuinely yes, and the reason is the slab rather than the winter. Concrete on ground stays cool most of the year, so the tile above it is cold underfoot well outside heating season. If that is your complaint, this addresses it directly. If your complaint is a room that feels damp or stuffy, spend on the exhaust fan first — it will do more, for less.

Mat, cable or membrane — which should I pick?

Simple rectangular floors suit a pre-spaced mat, which is the least expensive and fastest to lay. Rooms with a vanity, a curved wall or awkward obstacles suit loose cable, where the installer controls spacing. A dimpled membrane costs more per square foot but doubles as the uncoupling layer a Gulf Coast slab should have anyway, so on a slab job it is often the sensible choice rather than the extravagant one.

Do I need a smart thermostat?

You need a floor-sensing thermostat, which is not the same question. Reading floor temperature rather than air temperature is what protects the assembly and delivers the comfort you paid for. Beyond that, programmable is the meaningful feature, because these floors work best on a schedule. Connected models add remote control and usage data, which some people value and which changes nothing about how well the floor performs.
