Custom range hood for homes in Brookshire, TX 77423 — about 21 miles from our shop at 1530 W Sam Houston Pkwy N, Houston, TX 77043.

A range hood is one of the few kitchen elements that runs a motor, handles grease and connects the inside of your house to the roof. All three age. Ten years in, the difference between a hood that still works and one that has become decoration is rarely the brand on the liner. It is filter type, duct sizing, whether the blower can be reached, and whether anyone ever washed anything. Houston presses on all of it: grease combines with humidity, attic heat is hard on motors, and hard water leaves its signature on every stainless surface. This is what the long view looks like and what gets built in early to make it manageable.

Brookshire housing stock

Brookshire sits west of Katy in Waller County, and the housing splits sharply between the older town and what has gone in as development pushes out along I-10. In the older sections you will find modest single-story homes, some wood-frame on pier-and-beam, some on slab, often with a bathroom that was added at some point without much thought for how the drain lines would run. Outside town, properties on acreage are common and many are on private well and septic. Well water out here tends to be hard — scale on fixtures, spotting on frameless glass, shortened water heater life — so we talk about softening and about which finishes and glass coatings hold up before the new bathroom goes in, not after. Permitting differs depending on whether your address is inside city limits or in unincorporated Waller County. Typical projects: kitchen and bath updates, adding a bathroom, and correcting what an earlier addition did to the plumbing.

What we actually do

Longevity work starts at installation. We size the duct generously, because a tight duct loads with grease faster and never recovers, and we run it rigid and smooth-walled so there is no corrugation for residue to grip. Joints get sealed properly rather than screwed through, and the run gets sleeved where it crosses the attic. The blower is mounted so it can be unbolted and removed without dismantling the shell, and the junction box stays accessible rather than being buried behind plaster. Filters are stainless baffles, sized so they clear the shell opening and go in a dishwasher. The roof cap gets a serviceable damper and proper flashing, since that is a roof penetration with a ten-year life of its own. After that, the ongoing scope is simple and unglamorous: baffles washed on a regular rhythm, the liner interior wiped, the damper checked for free movement, the cap inspected when the roof is inspected, and the blower listened to for bearing noise. Motors are replaceable. Buried motors are not.

Choosing materials

Finishes age differently and it shows by year ten. Brushed stainless hides fingerprints and water spots far better than polished, and it can be cleaned along the grain and dried without visible damage. Living finishes, unlacquered brass, copper and zinc, darken and mottle by design, which ages gracefully but never returns to the showroom state. Plaster shells crack at inside corners, and on expansive clay in this area seasonal slab movement makes that likelier, so control joints and a paintable flexible sealant at the shell-to-wall junction are worth designing in. Painted wood shells hold up well if the carcass is plywood and every edge was sealed, and they can simply be repainted. Unsealed MDF swells at the joints and cannot be fixed. Inside, stainless baffle filters last essentially indefinitely with washing, while mesh filters clog and degrade. Motors are the true wear item, so a liner from a manufacturer that still sells replacement blowers is a genuine longevity decision rather than a brand preference.

Why this is different on the Gulf Coast

Grease and humidity work together here in a way they do not in a dry climate. Airborne moisture keeps residue tacky, so it accumulates on filters and duct walls faster and hardens later. Attic-mounted inline blowers live in extreme summer heat, which shortens motor and bearing life, and the same attic humidity condenses on any duct section left uninsulated, mixing water with grease at the joints. Hard water is the other constant. Wiping stainless with tap water and letting it dry leaves mineral spotting that people mistake for a finish defect, and the same scale builds on the cap damper and any exterior hardware. Nearer the bay, salt in the air attacks fasteners and thin gauge metal, which is why 316 stainless and stainless fixings pay off there. And a roof penetration in this metro takes hail, sustained sun and wind-driven rain, so flashing and sealant are consumable, not permanent.

Where these jobs fail

The largest one is never washing the baffles. A loaded filter pushes grease past into the duct, and duct residue is both a fire risk and a job to remove. The second is cleaning method: harsh caustic degreasers and abrasive pads dull stainless permanently, and scrubbing across the grain leaves marks that never come out. Wipe with the grain and dry the surface, because letting hard water evaporate on it is what causes the spotting people blame on the metal. Painting over a greasy shell without degreasing gives you paint that peels in sheets within a season. On the build side, sealing a shell so completely that the blower cannot be extracted turns a routine motor replacement into demolition, and burying a junction box behind finish work does the same for wiring faults. Undersized ducting shortens the interval between cleanings for the life of the house. And an ignored backdraft damper, stuck by scale or corrosion, either leaks conditioned air permanently or refuses to open at all.

What to expect

Service work starts with a look at the filters, the liner interior, the duct as far as it can be seen and the exterior cap. That tells us whether this is a cleaning, a blower replacement or a duct problem. Work is scheduled around cooking, since the kitchen is out of use while a liner is dropped, and attic work is planned for the cooler part of the day in summer. We degrease before any refinishing and confirm the damper moves freely before closing anything up. Afterwards you get a written cleaning rhythm and the part numbers for the liner and blower, so the next person has something to work from. If your hood has gone quiet, loud or ineffective, call (281) 235-6971.

What moves the price

For a hood already installed, the cost questions are different. A blower replacement is inexpensive if the motor is a current part and the unit can be reached, and expensive if the shell must be opened or the attic access is poor. Duct cleaning depends on run length, diameter and how bad the accumulation is. Refinishing a painted or plaster shell is mostly labour, driven by degreasing, surface preparation and access height. Replacing a corroded cap and damper brings roofing work, and roof pitch and material affect that. If the original duct was undersized or full of flex, upgrading it means opening ceilings, which is why it usually gets bundled with other work rather than done alone. Whether the liner manufacturer still supports parts is often the deciding factor between servicing and replacing.

Common questions

Can I replace just the blower instead of the whole hood?

Often yes, as long as the motor is still a supported part and the assembly can be reached. That is a decision made at installation, not at failure, which is why we keep blowers extractable and junction boxes accessible. When a manufacturer has dropped support, a liner swap inside the existing shell is usually the next option.

Why does my stainless hood spot even after cleaning?

That is almost always hard water rather than the steel. Minerals stay behind when tap water evaporates on the surface. Clean along the grain, rinse if needed, and dry the panel rather than letting it air dry. Polished finishes show it dramatically; brushed finishes are much more forgiving over a decade.

Does the duct itself ever need cleaning?

Yes, particularly on heavy-use kitchens with long runs. Grease migrates past loaded filters and accumulates on duct walls, which reduces airflow and creates a fire risk. Smooth-walled rigid duct is far easier to clean than corrugated flex, which is one of several reasons flex has no place in a grease exhaust run.

How often do baffle filters actually need washing?

It depends entirely on how you cook. Frequent frying or wok cooking loads filters far faster than occasional use. A practical test is to look at them under good light and run a finger across: if residue transfers, they are due. In this humidity, waiting until they visibly drip means the duct is already collecting grease.
