MS MS Home RemodelingHOUSTON METRO

We handle curbless shower install across 77441 in Fulshear, roughly 16 miles from our Energy Corridor base.

Two curbless showers can look identical the day the glass goes in and share almost nothing underneath. What separates them is the floor structure. A 1962 house near Oak Forest gives you a shallow slab with cast iron drain lines, or a pier-and-beam floor with joists running the wrong way for the drain you want. A 2003 house in Cinco Ranch gives you a post-tension slab and PVC. Tile selection barely changes between them. The drain work, the framing and the sequence change completely. Here are both versions side by side, so you can work out which house you own before anyone puts a number on it.

Fulshear housing stock

Fulshear has a small original town and a very large amount of construction built around it, most of it from roughly the 2010s onward. That changes what a remodeler does here. You are rarely chasing cast iron or galvanized pipe; you are upgrading a house that is structurally fine but finished to a builder’s budget. Common requests: replacing the builder shower surround with a full tile primary bath, real cabinetry instead of the original boxes, an outdoor kitchen and covered patio, finishing out a flex or game room, and lighting that was never planned properly. The one thing newer construction does not fix is the ground. These slabs sit on the same expansive clay, and a young slab on a recently cleared and graded lot still moves seasonally, which is why substrate prep and movement joints matter as much on a 2016 house as a 1966 one. Expect architectural review in most neighborhoods, and county permitting outside city limits.

How the job is built

Both start the same: protect the path in, demo the pan and wall board back to studs, and expose the drain so it can be seen rather than assumed. Older slab house, find the existing shower branch and confirm size and condition. Cast iron that is still sound gets cut back to clean pipe and joined with a no-hub coupling. Cast iron scaled down to a pinhole gets replaced back to a solid connection. Then either saw and chip a recess in the slab for a sloped pan, or raise the whole bathroom floor and resolve the height change at the doorway. Pier-and-beam, the drain drops between joists, and a joist in the way gets sistered and blocked, never notched to suit a trap. Newer post-tension slab, scan for tendons before a blade touches concrete. If the drain sits where a tendon runs, the design moves, usually to a linear drain along the back wall fed by a built-up floor. After that the two paths converge: set the drain, build the sloped substrate, waterproof, flood test, tile, grout, silicone the movement joints, template the glass.

Products and materials

Waterproofing splits into three practical families. A traditional mortar bed with a sheet liner and weep holes still works and is forgiving over an uneven slab. A bonded sheet membrane over cement board or a preformed foam tray is faster and thinner, which matters when you are fighting for height in a slab recess. Liquid-applied membrane suits odd shapes but depends entirely on film thickness being achieved, so it wants a careful hand. Drains: a linear drain lets the floor fall in one plane, which is what makes large-format porcelain work in a curbless entry. A centre drain needs four planes and pushes you toward mosaic. Porcelain over natural stone in this climate, unless you accept sealing stone on a schedule. Frameless glass gets tempered and, in Houston water, a factory-applied coating earns its cost. Blocking behind the wall board for grab bars is cheap while the studs are open and expensive later.

Local building realities

Post-tension slabs are ordinary in housing built west of Houston since the mid-1980s, and cutting one without locating tendons first is the single worst thing that can happen on this job. Scanning is not optional there. Inner-loop homes bring the opposite problem: cast iron drains that have been sitting in wet clay for sixty years, often with the shower branch already thinned. Both types sit on soil that swells and shrinks with the season, which is why a curbless floor gets a crack isolation layer over the slab and soft joints where tile meets wall. The other constant is humidity. Exhaust has to be sized for the room and ducted out through the roof or a wall, in insulated duct, not dumped into a hot attic where it condenses on the sheathing above the new work.

What to watch for

Cutting a post-tension slab on assumption. That is a structural repair, not a change order. Second, the drain slope. The floor has to fall toward the drain at the conventional quarter inch per foot, and if the substrate is flat and the tile is expected to fix it, water sits and grout stays dark. Third, treating the whole bathroom as dry because the shower has no curb. Water travels. Waterproofing has to run past the opening, and the shower head has to point away from it. Fourth, skipping the flood test to keep the tile setter on schedule. Filling the pan and holding it is the only proof the assembly works while it is still cheap to fix. Fifth, running grout tight into the wall-to-floor junction. That corner moves with the slab, so it gets silicone. Sixth, tying a new no-hub coupling to corroded cast iron and calling it done rather than cutting back to sound pipe.

How a project runs

We look at the floor structure first, not the tile. That means confirming slab or pier-and-beam, checking the age and type of the drain line, and scanning if there is any chance of tendons. Then a layout that puts the drain where the plumbing can reach it. Demo, plumbing rough, inspection where the work calls for it, substrate, waterproofing, flood test, tile, grout, silicone, glass template, glass install, trim and fixtures. Bathroom plumbing and electrical work is permitted in the City of Houston, and unincorporated Harris and Fort Bend handle it differently, so we confirm the path for your address rather than guessing. Cost factors

Whether the floor gets recessed or built up. Sawing and chipping a slab, hauling the spoil and resetting a drain is real labour; building up is cheaper but has to be resolved at the door. Distance from the existing drain to where you want it. Tendon scanning on a post-tension slab. Condition of what is exposed at demo, which is why old cast iron is the largest unknown on inner-loop jobs. Drain hardware, since a linear drain and its grate cost more than a round one. Tile format and pattern, because small mosaic and intricate layouts are hours. Glass size and thickness. Bench, niches, thermostatic valve, and whether wall tile runs to the ceiling. Access matters too, second floor and long carries add time.

Common questions

Will water run out onto the bathroom floor?

Not if the wet zone is set up properly. A curbless shower needs enough length between the head and the opening, a floor that falls to the drain across its whole area, waterproofing carried past the entry, and a glass panel or an offset entry. Where the room is tight, a shallow sloped transition or a linear drain at the opening handles the rest.

Is a curbless shower harder to keep clean in Houston water?

The floor is easier, since there is no curb top to scrub. The glass is the maintenance item. Hard water leaves scale that etches uncoated glass over time, so coated glass and a squeegee kept in the shower make a real difference. Linear drain channels also need the hair trap pulled and rinsed, which takes a minute.

How much of the bathroom has to come apart?

More than people expect. The shower goes back to studs and the floor is opened or built up, so the vanity area and the flooring outside the shower are usually in play as well. If the drain moves, the opening in the slab extends past the shower footprint. It is worth deciding on the whole room up front rather than mid-job.

Can any bathroom be made curbless?

Most can, but the method depends on structure. On slab you either recess the concrete or raise the floor. On pier-and-beam you have more room to drop a pan between joists. The hard cases are post-tension slabs where the drain you want lands on a tendon, and second-floor baths with shallow framing. That is a design constraint, not a dead end.
