We handle bathroom storage cabinet across 77093 in Houston, roughly 20 miles from our Energy Corridor base.

Most Houston bathrooms run out of storage long before they run out of floor. The fix that actually adds room without shrinking the walkway is a recessed cabinet set into the stud bay, or a full-height linen tower built to the wall it lands against. We build both. The work is more carpentry than shopping: find a bay with nothing running through it, frame the opening, set a box that fits the real hole rather than the drawing, and finish it so it reads like part of the room. What follows is how one of those jobs actually runs in a bathroom that is already tiled and already in use.

What the work involves

We start by opening a small inspection hole and looking. Interior walls in Houston baths carry more than people expect: vent stack, lavatory drain, a dryer duct in older homes, and low-voltage runs added over the years. If the bay is clear and non-bearing, we cut the opening square, add a header and sill, and block the sides so the box has something to screw to on all four edges.

The cabinet box itself is plywood, not particleboard, with a face frame or a clean frameless edge depending on the rest of the room. Backs are captured in a dado rather than stapled on, because a stapled back racks the first time somebody loads it with towels. Shelves get adjustable pins and a front edge band so they do not sag.

We set the box plumb to itself, not to the wall, then shim and scribe the trim to close the gap. Where the cabinet meets tile, we leave a caulk joint rather than butting hard. Drawer boxes are dovetailed or dowelled with soft-close undermount slides. Interior gets a finished surface that wipes down. Doors go on last, adjusted after the paint has cured so hinge settings hold.

What drives the cost

What actually moves the number: whether the stud bay is clear. Finding a drain or a vent means either relocating it, which brings in a plumber and usually a permit, or moving the cabinet to another wall and patching the first opening. That single discovery is the largest swing on a small job.

Then material and construction. A painted plywood box with adjustable shelves sits at one end; a stained hardwood tower with dovetailed drawers, undermount slides and interior lighting sits well above it. Door style follows the same curve — slab and shaker are straightforward, applied moulding and inset doors take more fitting time.

Tile repair is its own line. Cutting into a tiled wall means matching tile that may no longer be made, so we plan the opening to land in grout lines where we can. Electrical for interior lighting or an outlet inside the cabinet adds a permitted trade. Ceiling height, since a tower to a nine-foot ceiling is a different build than one to eight. Ranges vary widely by scope; we price the actual room after seeing it.

Building for Gulf Coast conditions

A bathroom is the most humid room in a house that is already humid nine months of the year. Particleboard cabinet boxes take that on directly. The edges swell at the toe kick and under the sink first, then the face separates and no amount of paint pulls it back. Plywood boxes with sealed edges hold in this climate, which is why we spec them for anything that lives in a wet room.

Exhaust matters as much as the cabinet. If the fan is undersized, ducted into the attic instead of out through the roof or soffit, or wired to the light switch that nobody leaves on, the cabinet is storing damp towels in a damp box. We check the fan before we build and say so if it needs sizing up or reducting.

On slab-on-grade over Gulf Coast clay, floors move seasonally. A full-height tower fastened tight to both the floor and the ceiling will show a joint somewhere when the slab flexes. We fasten to the wall framing, leave the base scribed with a shoe or caulk line, and put the movement where it can be maintained instead of where it cracks.

Houston housing stock

Houston is not one housing stock, so it is not one kind of remodel. In the Heights and Woodland Heights you are often working on 1910s–1930s wood-frame homes on pier-and-beam, where leveling, sill and joist repair, and original wiring long past its service life come before anything cosmetic — and where a home in a designated historic district brings design review with it. Montrose, Oak Forest and Garden Oaks add mid-century layers. Meyerland, Westbury, Braeswood and Sharpstown are largely 1950s–60s slab ranch: cast iron drains near the end of their life, galvanized supply, single-pane windows, popcorn ceilings that should be tested before they are disturbed. Memorial and Alief lean 1970s–80s, which brings aluminum branch wiring and polybutylene supply into the conversation. West of Beltway 8 you are usually in 2000s and 2010s construction, where the job is upgrade rather than repair. Houston has no zoning, but plumbing, electrical and structural work is permitted, and deed restrictions still govern a great deal.

How we work

First visit is measuring and probing. We confirm what is in the wall, check the exhaust, look at how the floor sits, and talk through where the cabinet does the most good. You get a written scope listing box construction, door style, hardware and finish, so there is no guessing about what a word like “custom” covers.

Build happens off site where we can control dust and finish. On installation day we protect the floor and the tub, cut and frame the opening, set and shim the box, then trim it out. Plumbing or electrical changes are scheduled with the permitted trades ahead of that day rather than discovered on it.

Finish work — caulk, touch-up, hinge and drawer adjustment — happens after everything has settled, usually on a short return visit. Call (281) 235-6971 to set up a walkthrough.

Common questions

Will a floor-to-ceiling cabinet crack if the slab moves?

It can if it is fastened hard at both ends. Houston slabs sit on expansive clay and move with the seasons, which is the same reason doors bind in summer. We anchor the cabinet to wall framing, hold the base with a scribed shoe or a caulk joint, and keep the top trim free-floating, so seasonal movement shows up in a maintainable joint instead of a split panel.

Do I need a permit for a storage cabinet?

The cabinet itself, generally not. If the work involves moving a drain or vent, or adding a circuit or outlet, that is permitted plumbing or electrical work in Houston, and rules differ in unincorporated Harris and Fort Bend County. We handle the permitting through the licensed trade doing that portion and tell you upfront which parts of your scope trigger it.

Can you recess a cabinet into any bathroom wall?

No. It has to be a non-bearing wall with a clear stud bay. Plumbing vents, drains and older dryer ducts often run through the exact wall people want to use. We open a small inspection hole first and look rather than guessing. If the bay is occupied, the options are relocating the service with a licensed trade, or shifting the cabinet to a wall that is actually available.

Why plywood instead of particleboard for a bathroom cabinet?

Humidity. In this climate a bathroom cycles wet and dry every day, and particleboard edges swell where they meet water — under the sink, at the toe kick, along the bottom of a door. Once swollen it does not go back. Plywood with sealed edges and a finished interior handles that cycling far better and takes a hinge screw again if a door ever needs to come off.
