MS MS Home RemodelingHOUSTON METRO

We handle wheelchair accessible shower across 77489 in Missouri City, roughly 13 miles from our Energy Corridor base.

There are two accessible showers and they are built for two different people. A roll-in shower is entered seated, in a chair, with no threshold. A transfer shower is entered by moving from a chair onto a fixed or fold-down seat just inside a low threshold. The roll-in costs more, takes more floor area, and involves the slab. The transfer shower is smaller, cheaper, and entirely adequate for a large number of people. Choosing between them is not a budget decision dressed up as a design one — it depends on how the person actually moves, and on whether that is expected to change.

What the work involves

A transfer shower is compact by design. A fixed or fold-down seat sits on one wall within reach of the entry. The threshold is low, often a half-inch bevelled lip or a small curb, so it can be built on a conventional slab without concrete work. Grab bars go on the wall behind and beside the seat, the valve and handheld are placed within reach from that seat, and the enclosure keeps water in. It suits someone who can pivot from a wheelchair to a seat with support.

A roll-in shower is a different build. No threshold. Floor sloped in a single plane, usually to a linear drain. Enough clear area for the chair to enter and, ideally, turn. The valve and handheld are positioned for a seated user who is not on a fixed seat. Waterproofing extends across the whole area rather than just inside an enclosure. And the floor method — recess the slab, build up the floor, or a very low ramp — is decided against your specific slab.

Both get continuous plywood blocking across every wall. That is the item that costs almost nothing now and makes future changes possible without opening walls.

Building for Gulf Coast conditions

The Houston-specific factor that pushes this decision is the slab. A transfer shower with a low threshold can generally be built without touching the concrete. A roll-in usually cannot avoid the question. On a post-tension slab — the norm in newer Katy, Cypress, and Fulshear construction — recessing the floor means scanning for tendons first and possibly engineering input, and it is a real cost. When budget is tight and the person can transfer, that difference is a legitimate reason to build the transfer version.

Humidity affects both but affects the roll-in more, because it is an open, unenclosed wet area used for longer sessions. Exhaust sized for the room and ducted outdoors is not optional here.

Hard water affects both identically and argues for a handheld with a wipeable face and a valve with replaceable cartridges rather than a decorative fixture that scales up.

If the bathroom is in a part of the metro that has flooded, tile through the bathroom and the adjacent hall, and outlets set higher than standard, are reasonable requests to build in at the same time.

What we see in Missouri City

Missouri City has two distinct remodeling populations. Quail Valley and the neighborhoods around it are largely 1970s and 1980s — sunken living rooms, wet bars, dark paneling, a primary bath split into a closet-sized shower and a mirrored vanity wall, popcorn ceilings throughout. Homes from that window can carry aluminum branch circuit wiring, and the later end of it can carry polybutylene supply lines. Both are worth identifying early, because either one changes the scope of a kitchen or bathroom significantly. The Sienna side and other newer sections are 1990s onward and need very little systems work; there it is finish upgrades, primary bath conversions, and outdoor living. All of it is slab on grade over expansive clay, which is why we prep substrate and detail movement joints rather than setting tile straight onto a slab and hoping for the best. Permitting depends on whether your address falls inside city limits or in unincorporated Fort Bend County.

What drives the cost

The configuration choice is the price bracket. A transfer shower on an existing slab with the drain in place is the modest end. A roll-in with a recessed post-tension slab and a relocated drain is well above it.

Under that: whether the bathroom door widens and whether the wall is bearing; the shower’s floor area; whether a linear drain or a center drain is used; tile format, which matters more on a sloped plane; and whether an enclosure is glass, curtain, or open.

Fixtures, bars, and seats are a small share of the total. So is the difference between a fold-down teak seat and a plastic one.

The variable people miss is future-proofing. Building the roll-in now when the transfer version would do today, for someone with a progressive condition, avoids remodeling the same bathroom twice. That is not a construction cost question — it is a question about the next several years, and it belongs in the conversation.

Ranges are wide either way.

How we work

We want the person who will use the shower present, in the chair they use, at the measuring visit. Watching an actual transfer tells us more than any drawing. Which side they lead with, whether they need a bar to pull on or push against, how far they can reach, whether a caregiver stands alongside.

If an occupational therapist is involved, their recommendations take priority over generic dimensions.

Then, if the roll-in is in play, we determine the slab type and scan it if there is any doubt.

Where the choice is close we lay out both versions and price them side by side, so the decision is made on real numbers rather than assumption.

Then permits under your jurisdiction, demo, floor method, drain and slope, framing and continuous blocking, plumbing rough-in and inspection, waterproofing and flood test, tile, and fit-out. Final walkthrough is a real use, not a look.

Common questions

Where should the controls go?

Within reach from where the person will actually be, which is usually near the entry rather than centered on the back wall — so the water can be started and adjusted before moving under it. A handheld on a slide bar with a long hose gives flexibility, and a thermostatic or pressure-balanced valve prevents temperature surprises. Reach from the seated position gets measured with the person present, not taken from a chart.

How do I know which one we need?

Watch a transfer. If the person can move from the chair to a seat with a bar and modest support, a transfer shower is enough and it costs less. If they enter seated and stay seated, you need roll-in. The complicating factor is direction of travel — if mobility is expected to decline, building the roll-in now is usually cheaper than building the transfer version and remodeling again in a few years.

Can we build a transfer shower now and convert it later?

Partially. Continuous blocking, a bathroom door wide enough for the chair, and plumbing positioned for a seated user all carry over and cost little now. What does not carry over is the floor — converting a curbed shower to curbless later means opening the pan, the waterproofing, and possibly the slab. If a roll-in is likely within a few years, the honest advice is usually to build it once.

Does a roll-in shower need a door or glass?

Not necessarily, and often it is better without. A fixed panel with an open entry keeps most spray contained without obstructing a chair, and a weighted curtain works well and costs less. A hinged glass door is generally the wrong choice — it needs clearance to swing and it is one more thing to manage from a seated position. Size and slope keep the water in more than a door does.
