We are based in 77077, so walk in shower installation in Houston is work on our doorstep.

People ask what separates a shower that costs a little from one that costs a lot, and the honest answer is that the tile is rarely the difference. What changes is the pan, the waterproofing, the glass and the valve. Below is what each tier actually is, in materials and labour, so you can decide where your money does something you will notice and where it does not. Nothing here is a price. It is a description of three real specification levels we build in Houston bathrooms.

What the work involves

At the entry level the pan is a moulded acrylic or solid-surface base set in mortar, the surround is cement board with a bonded membrane, tile is a manageable format, and the enclosure is a fixed panel or a sliding door on a track. Plumbing is a pressure-balance valve and a single head. The mid level replaces the base with a pre-sloped foam pan and a bonded membrane carried up the walls as one system, adds a linear or offset drain so large-format tile can run in a single plane, adds a framed niche and a floating bench, and moves to a frameless panel and door with blocking behind the hinges. The high level starts at the slab: a recessed or built-up floor for a true curbless entry, tile or porcelain slab to the ceiling, thermostatic mixing with a volume control and more than one outlet, which usually means larger supply back to the manifold, and often heated floor and a fan on a humidistat.

What goes wrong, and how it is avoided

The most expensive mistake in the entry tier is spending the budget on tile and cutting the waterproofing, which is the one component you cannot inspect or replace later. The most common mid-tier mistake is mixing manufacturers in a bonded assembly, which voids the system coverage and puts the transitions on you. In the high tier it is specifying multiple outlets on supply that cannot deliver them, so nothing runs at pressure when two are open. Across all three, undersized mortar coverage under large tile leaves voids that crack under load, and skipped silicone at inside corners and the floor-to-wall joint puts hairline cracks in the grout within the first seasonal swing. Ordering glass before the tile is finished is another one: templating off framing rather than finished tile produces a panel that does not sit right and cannot be recut.

What drives the cost

Pan and waterproofing method. A moulded base is far less labour than a sloped bonded pan, and a curbless entry costs more again because the floor structure has to change. Glass configuration, from a fixed panel through a frameless door with heavy hardware. Valve complexity: one outlet on a pressure-balance valve versus a thermostatic mixer feeding several, plus the supply upgrade that follows. Tile format and material, where handling and flatness prep drive labour more than the tile itself. Niches, benches and curbless thresholds each add framing and waterproofing detail. Finally, the condition of what is behind the wall, which in older Houston stock is the item most likely to move the number after demolition.

Materials and specification

Entry tier: acrylic or cultured-stone base, cement backer board, liquid or sheet membrane, porcelain field tile, high-performance cementitious grout, chrome or brushed-nickel trim in a valve family with common parts. Mid tier: foam pre-sloped pan and bonded board from one manufacturer so the warranty is not split, linear drain with a tileable or solid grate, large-format porcelain back-buttered for full mortar coverage, movement joints at the changes of plane, tempered glass with a coating. High tier: porcelain slab or stone, with the reminder that marble and limestone etch under hard water and want sealing on a schedule and a pH-neutral cleaner. Solid surface and quartz-look porcelain avoid that problem. Thermostatic valves and any body-spray arrangement should come from a line whose cartridges are still supported, because that is the part that fails first.

Building for Gulf Coast conditions

Specification level changes how the shower ages here, not just how it looks. Frameless glass in Houston water spots quickly, so the mid and high tiers are worth a factory-applied protective coating and a squeegee habit; without one you are looking at etched silica film within a year or two. Multi-outlet showers need the supply to carry them; older inner-loop houses with necked-down galvanised lines cannot, and that upgrade belongs in the high-tier scope from the start. Any tier gets a fan ducted outside in insulated duct, because our indoor humidity does not fall off overnight the way it does in a dry climate. Steam, if you go there, is a different assembly entirely: full-height waterproofing, a sloped ceiling, and a vapour-tight enclosure.

Houston housing stock

Houston is not one housing stock, so it is not one kind of remodel. In the Heights and Woodland Heights you are often working on 1910s–1930s wood-frame homes on pier-and-beam, where leveling, sill and joist repair, and original wiring long past its service life come before anything cosmetic — and where a home in a designated historic district brings design review with it. Montrose, Oak Forest and Garden Oaks add mid-century layers. Meyerland, Westbury, Braeswood and Sharpstown are largely 1950s–60s slab ranch: cast iron drains near the end of their life, galvanized supply, single-pane windows, popcorn ceilings that should be tested before they are disturbed. Memorial and Alief lean 1970s–80s, which brings aluminum branch wiring and polybutylene supply into the conversation. West of Beltway 8 you are usually in 2000s and 2010s construction, where the job is upgrade rather than repair. Houston has no zoning, but plumbing, electrical and structural work is permitted, and deed restrictions still govern a great deal.

How we work

Specification comes before demolition, because the valve, drain type and glass configuration determine framing and rough plumbing. We put those in writing with the actual products named. Then demolition, rough plumbing and framing with blocking set for whichever glass tier you chose, inspection where the work is permitted, waterproofing, a flood test left standing, then tile and grout. Silicone goes in the moving joints. Glass is templated off finished tile and installed last, with trim and the fan. If a discovery item during demolition changes the scope, you hear it that day, not at the end. To talk through which tier fits your bathroom, call MS Home Remodeling at (281) 235-6971.

Common questions

Do body sprays actually work in an older house?

Only if the supply can feed them. Many pre-1980 inner-Houston homes still have galvanised branch lines that have narrowed with scale, and adding outlets to that produces pressure drop, not luxury. If you want multiple outlets, price the supply upgrade back to a proper manifold as part of the same job or drop the sprays.

Is a tiled pan better than an acrylic base?

Better at looking custom and at handling odd shapes. Not automatically better at staying dry. A well-built acrylic base with a properly bonded surround is a sound shower, and it has fewer grout joints to maintain. Choose a tiled pan for the design, for a curbless entry or for an irregular footprint, not because someone told you acrylic leaks.

Where should I not save money?

The waterproofing system, the blocking behind glass hardware, and the exhaust fan. All three are buried or overlooked, all three are expensive to correct later, and none of them show in a photograph. Tile, fixtures and glass style are visible choices you can revisit. What is behind the tile, you get one attempt at.
