Cypress 77429 sits about 17 miles from our shop, and walk in shower installation is work we do there regularly.

The same walk-in shower drawing lands very differently in a 1968 house off Long Point than in a 2004 house in Cinco Ranch. In the older bathroom the constraint is what sits behind the tile: cast-iron drain, galvanised supply, no useful blocking, often no exhaust at all. In the newer one the constraint is the slab, and whether anyone knows where the post-tension cables run under the floor you want to recess. Both finish as one open compartment with a bench and a glass panel. The route there is not the same.

Cypress homes and this work

Cypress is mostly unincorporated northwest Harris County, and the housing reflects a building push that ran from the 1990s straight through the 2010s. Post-tension slab, brick across the front, two stories, a tall entry, a garden tub the family stopped using years ago, and cabinet boxes that are particleboard behind a solid door. That last detail matters in this climate: particleboard swells if a supply line weeps or a dishwasher leaks, and it does not come back. When we rebuild a kitchen here we move to plywood boxes. The rest of the pattern is predictable and fixable — builder carpet, a wall between the kitchen and family room that no longer makes sense, a formal dining room nobody eats in. These are newer homes, but they sit on the same expansive clay as everything else, so substrate flatness and movement joints still decide whether your tile looks right in year five. Most neighborhoods have deed restrictions and architectural review for exterior changes.

What we actually do

Demolition goes to the studs and down to the substrate. In an older bathroom that means breaking a mud bed off metal lath, and under it we expect a cast-iron drain body with a lead-and-oakum joint, usually cut back to sound pipe and transitioned with a no-hub band. In a 2000s bathroom the pan is normally a mud bed over a sheet liner with a three-piece clamping drain, and the waste below is already PVC, so the only question is whether it lands where the new drain has to be. Then framing: the opening is squared and plumbed, blocking added for glass hardware, a floating bench, and grab bars whether or not you hang them now. Supply is replaced back to a reachable point and the valve set to finished-wall depth, which depends on the tile you actually chose. Drain set, waterproofing over board, flood test before any tile. Then tile, grout, silicone at every change of plane, glass template, trim, fan.

Choosing materials

Waterproofing is the decision that matters. A bonded system, either a sheet membrane over foam or backer board or a liquid membrane rolled to the manufacturer’s wet-film thickness, tolerates the small seasonal movement Houston slabs produce better than a buried liner with a clamping drain, and it is testable before tile. Foam board pans and preformed curbs suit older houses because they are light and dimensionally predictable on a floor that is not. Porcelain is the default field tile. Natural stone is workable but marble etches under our hard water and wants sealing on a schedule. Cementitious high-performance grout is fine; epoxy resists hard-water film but is unforgiving on textured tile. Glass is tempered, and frameless panels need real blocking, not drywall anchors. Choose a valve family with parts still on the shelf.

Why this is different on the Gulf Coast

Older inner-loop bathrooms have been riding expansive clay for fifty-odd years, so we expect walls out of plumb and floors out of flat, and we correct both before tile rather than tiling over them. Post-1985 stock west of Beltway 8 is usually post-tension slab, which changes the curbless conversation entirely: recessing that floor means scanning for tendons first, and if the scan is unclear the honest answer is a low ramped threshold and a linear drain instead of a slab cut. Humidity is the constant in both. A shower this size needs a fan sized to the room and ducted to the outside through insulated duct, not dumped into the attic where the condensate comes back down through the ceiling.

Where these jobs fail

The classic on an older house is tiling straight onto whatever plane the framing gives you. Large-format tile needs the substrate flat, and if the wall bows, the tile lippage shows in a shower where the light rakes down it. Fix the framing first. The classic on a newer house is coring or saw-cutting a post-tension slab without scanning, which can strike a tendon. Scan, or design around it. Third failure is skipping the flood test because the schedule is tight; a leak found after the tile is set costs the tile. Fourth is grouting the inside corners and the floor-to-wall joint, which cracks out because the planes move independently; those get silicone. Fifth is undersizing or misrouting the exhaust so the room never dries, which shows up as mould at the ceiling grout and a swollen door casing.

What to expect

We start with a site visit and measurements, then a written scope that names the waterproofing system, the drain type and the glass configuration, because those three decide the rest. Demolition and discovery come next, and on an older house we reserve a conversation for whatever the walls reveal. Rough plumbing, framing and blocking, inspection where the work is permitted. Waterproofing, then a flood test we leave standing. Tile, grout, silicone. Glass is templated only after the tile is finished, so it lands last with the trim and the fan. What moves the price

Drain relocation is the biggest swing. If the new drain lands over the old waste, the plumbing is short. If it moves, and the floor is slab, you are into cutting, scanning, patching and inspection. Curbless costs more than a low curb for the same reason. Tile format and material drive labour more than the tile price does: large panels need flat substrates and more setting time, mosaics need more grout work. Glass is usually one of the larger single items, and frameless with heavy hinges costs more than a fixed panel. Older houses add discovery items: failed cast iron, galvanised supply, no blocking, undersized venting. Permitted plumbing work in the City of Houston carries its own cost, and unincorporated Harris and Fort Bend handle it differently.

Common questions

Can I have a curbless shower on my Katy slab?

Sometimes. It depends on whether the slab can be recessed, which on a post-tension slab means scanning for tendons and accepting the result. If the scan says no, the workable alternatives are building the bathroom floor up to meet the shower or using a very low ramped threshold with a linear drain at the wall.

Is my old cast-iron shower drain worth keeping?

It depends what the pipe looks like once it is exposed. Cast iron in Houston soil can be sound at fifty years or scaled nearly shut. We cut back to clean metal, look at the wall thickness, and either band on to it or recommend replacing the branch. That call is made on demolition day, not in the quote.

My house is from the 1970s. Will you find asbestos?

Possibly, in floor tile, mastic, sheet vinyl backing or a popcorn ceiling. We do not guess. If a suspect material is in the demolition path on a pre-1980 bathroom, it gets sampled by a testing lab before anyone opens it, and abatement is handled by a licensed abatement contractor, not by us.
