Under-cabinet lighting has an unusually wide spread between the cheapest version and the most involved one, and the difference is not decoration. It is where the driver lives, whether the light is even, whether it dims to a usable low end, and whether a repair means a screwdriver or a drywall patch. Stick-on battery pucks and a hardwired 24V run with a tested dimmer both put light on a countertop. Ten years apart in service life, and completely different to live with at night. This is a plain comparison of the three specification levels, what each one honestly does well, and where each one stops.

Local building realities

Specification level changes how the job ages in this climate. Adhesive-mounted budget strips fail early in Houston kitchens because months of humid air and cooking grease work on the tape backing, and the ends peel first. Battery units become a chore because nobody wants to pull a fixture down twice a year. Mid and high builds place the driver in conditioned cabinet space rather than a soffit cavity or attic, where summer heat is what kills the electronics. Hard water shows up too. Raking light across a backsplash makes mineral film and cloudy grout obvious, so a high-specification install often pairs with a dimmer specifically so the counter can be lit softly at night without spotlighting every water spot. Damp-rated runs matter near the dishwasher, where steam is released straight up under the counter edge at the end of every cycle.

How the job is built

At the budget end, the work is light: battery or plug-in linear bars mounted to the cabinet bottom, cords dressed to the back corner, no wall opened. Mid specification is the common remodel choice. We confirm a lighting circuit and a neutral, install a wall dimmer, run low-voltage from a driver inside an upper cabinet, mount aluminium channel at the cabinet front edge, seat the tape and diffuser, and cut only at marked points. High specification adds control and quality: tunable or high-CRI linear fixtures, a driver sized with headroom, dimming that holds steady at a very low output for night use, separate zones for island and perimeter, and in a full remodel the wiring is chased through cabinet gables before the boxes are set and the backsplash is tiled. Across all three, the sequence is the same: confirm the power source, set fixture position for glare, place the driver where a human can reach it, then mount and commission.

Products and materials

Budget usually means an integrated plastic bar with a fixed low-CRI LED and no serviceable parts, held on with foam tape. It works until it does not, and then it is thrown away. Mid specification is LED tape in aluminium extrusion, generally 24V constant voltage, 2700K to 3000K, CRI in the 90s, with a remote driver matched to a tested dimmer. The extrusion is doing real work as a heat sink and as a mount that does not rely on adhesive. High specification adds tunable white, tighter colour binning so segments match, higher output per foot where a dark stone counter eats light, and a driver with capacity left over rather than one run at its limit. Watch the trade-offs. High output on a light quartz top can glare. Very cheap tape browns its phosphor and shifts colour under its own heat. Fixed-CCT fixtures cost less and are the right answer in most kitchens.

Cost factors

The single largest factor is whether walls and cabinets are open. Fishing behind an installed tile backsplash is skilled, slow work. After that, the count of separate cabinet runs, because each one is another connection, another channel cut and another termination. Whether a lighting circuit and a neutral already exist decides if panel work and a new home run enter the picture. Control choice moves the number: a simple tested dimmer pair versus tunable white with a compatible control is a real step. Fixture quality, output per foot and colour binning also matter. Older homes may add aluminium wiring remediation. Permits and inspection requirements vary by jurisdiction and belong in the estimate.

Working in Bellaire

Bellaire is its own city inside the Loop, with its own building department and its own rules — not Houston’s. Much of the original stock is 1940s–1960s one-story ranch and cottage homes on slab, and a large share of those lots have been rebuilt over the past couple of decades with two-story new construction. That split matters on a remodel. In an original mid-century house you should expect cast iron drain lines, galvanized supply, eight-foot ceilings, a kitchen sized for 1955, and textured ceilings that may contain asbestos and need testing before anyone scrapes anything. Slabs here sit on expansive clay, so tile that was set without proper substrate prep or a movement joint tends to telegraph a crack along the same line every dry summer. The work we see most: opening the kitchen wall into the living room, converting a cramped hall bath, and adding a primary suite. In the rebuilt homes it is usually finish-level updating rather than systems work.

What to watch for

The common budget mistake is treating adhesive as a mount. The common mid-level mistake is buying a driver and a dimmer separately and discovering flicker or a dead low end afterwards; they should be a tested pair. At every level, mounting the strip at the back of the cabinet washes the backsplash and reflects off polished stone into your eyes, when the point was to light the cutting board. Skipping a diffuser leaves dotting. Running a driver at its maximum rating shortens its life, particularly in a warm cabinet. Cutting LED tape anywhere but the marked copper pads kills the segment. Overspending is a real error too: tunable white with no plan for who will ever change the colour is money that would have gone further into higher CRI and a proper channel. And a high specification install with the driver sealed inside a soffit is worse than a mid one with the driver in a cabinet, because the first failure becomes demolition.

How a project runs

We look at the panel, switch boxes, the space above the cabinets, and the counter material, then talk through which specification level actually fits how you use the kitchen. Fixture position, driver location and route are settled before anything is cut. Electrical work is completed and inspected where required. Channels go up, tape is seated and terminated, the diffuser is fitted, and the dimmer is commissioned in a dark room so the low end can be judged honestly. We leave spare tape from the same reel where a future segment might be needed. For a walkthrough of the options, call (281) 235-6971.

Common questions

Are plug-in strips ever the right answer?

Yes, in a rental, a short-term fix, or a kitchen that is being fully remodelled within a couple of years. They light a counter. What they do not do is stay put in humid Gulf Coast air, dim smoothly, or hide the cord and the source from a seated sight line.

Will brighter always look better?

No. Output should suit the counter. A dark granite or soapstone top absorbs light and takes more; a light polished quartz can throw glare back at you if the run is overpowered or aimed badly. Position at the front edge, a diffuser, and a dimmer usually beat raw brightness.

Is tunable white worth it?

Sometimes. It is genuinely useful if the kitchen is also a late-night space and you want a warm, very low setting. If nobody will touch the control after the first month, that money does more good spent on higher colour rendering, better channel and diffuser, and a driver with headroom.
