Looking at tile shower installation in Simonton 77476? That’s around 21 miles from us, well inside the area we work daily.

The interesting question about a tile shower is not how it looks the week it is finished. It is what it looks like after a decade of Houston water, daily use and a slab that moves with the seasons. Some things age well and some are consumable from day one. Silicone is a wear item. Grout haze and mineral film are ongoing housekeeping. Waterproofing, if it was done correctly, is the part you should never think about again. Understanding which is which tells you where to spend during the build and what to expect to touch up along the way.

What the work involves

A shower built to survive ten years follows a specific order. Pan pre-sloped to the drain before any waterproofing goes on, so water always has somewhere to go. Waterproofing lapped continuously up the walls, into the curb, and sealed at the drain flange and the valve penetration. An overnight flood test before tile. Movement joints held at every inside corner, at the wall-to-pan transition, and at the perimeter, filled with silicone rather than grout. Tile set with full mortar coverage, particularly on the floor, so there are no voids under foot to crack tile later. Grout packed fully and cleaned before it hardens. Then silicone tooled properly at the joints and given time to cure. Ten years later, what typically needs attention is exactly that silicone, some mineral film on glass and stone, and possibly a grout line at a corner that moved. What should not need attention is anything behind the tile.

What goes wrong, and how it is avoided

The failures that show up years later were nearly all built in on day one. No pre-slope under the pan, so water sits under the tile and the pan stays wet. Voids under floor tile from spot-bonding, which crack the tile once someone stands on the hollow. Grout instead of silicone at the corners, which cracks with the first seasonal slab movement and lets water past. Waterproofing that stopped short at the curb or was not sealed at the valve penetration. On the maintenance side, the common error is aggressive cleaning: acidic descalers on marble, or abrasive pads on glass coating, both of which cause the damage they were meant to prevent. Another is ignoring loose or blackened silicone for years. It is a thirty-minute job to cut out and replace and a much larger one after water has been tracking behind it. Running the fan for a few minutes only, rather than long enough to actually clear the room, is a quiet contributor to all of it.

What drives the cost

For a new build, the same drivers apply as always: layout and drain location, tile format and pattern, glass, valve type, and whatever the demolition reveals about existing plumbing. For an existing shower, the question is whether you are looking at maintenance or repair. Re-siliconing joints and regrouting a section is minor. A pan that has failed is a full rebuild, because the waterproofing is beneath everything and cannot be patched from the surface. In between sits localised tile replacement, where matching an out-of-production tile is often the limiting factor. Keeping a box of spare tile from the original job is the cheapest insurance available. Expect ranges rather than a fixed number until someone has seen it.

Materials and specification

Choose for a decade, not for the photograph. Porcelain with very low absorption handles wet service and hard water with the least fuss. Natural stone is beautiful and high maintenance here: it wants periodic sealing, it etches under acidic and many general-purpose cleaners, and hard water spots show. Glass with a factory-applied protective coating is easier to keep clear, though the coating is not permanent and a squeegee after each shower does more than any product. High-performance cement grout is repairable; epoxy stains less but is harder to patch. Neutral silicone at all movement joints, replaced when it discolours or loosens. On the mechanical side, a quality valve cartridge is a serviceable part, so specify a brand with parts availability rather than a fixture nobody stocks. Any adjacent cabinetry should be plywood boxes with a proper finish, because particleboard swells in this climate once moisture finds an edge.

Building for Gulf Coast conditions

Two local conditions do most of the ageing. The first is hard water. Houston supply leaves scale on glass, chrome and any polished stone surface, and it builds in shower heads and body sprays. Left alone, that film etches into untreated glass and becomes permanent. The second is humidity that never really breaks. A bathroom here does not dry out on its own between showers, so an exhaust fan sized for the room and ducted to the outside is a longevity item, not a comfort item. Add the slab underneath. Expansive clay lifts and drops seasonally, and that movement shows up first as a hairline crack in the grout at an inside corner or where the floor meets the wall. That is precisely why those joints are siliconed. Grout in a moving joint cracks every time, and the crack is where water gets in.

Simonton homes and this work

Simonton is a small city along the Brazos corridor west of Fulshear, and it is largely rural — acreage, custom homes of varying ages, some manufactured housing, private well and septic in many cases. Because of where it sits, elevation and water-resistant construction come up in conversation far more often here than they would on an inner-loop remodel. That pushes material choices in a particular direction: tile or a quality LVP instead of wood flooring, outlets set higher than standard, closed-cell foam rather than batt insulation where an assembly could get wet, and cabinet boxes that will not disintegrate if they do. Hard well water also shapes fixture and shower glass selection. We do not generalize about individual properties out here — lots vary, elevations vary, and what is right for one address on a road may not be right for the next one. Floodplain and permitting requirements should be confirmed for the specific parcel before design work starts.

How we work

For a new shower, the sequence runs demolition, plumbing, substrate and waterproofing, overnight flood test, tile, grout, silicone, then glass templated after tile. For an assessment of an existing shower, it starts with a look at the joints, the grout at the corners, the drain, and any staining on the other side of the wall, plus a flood test where the pan is in question. That distinction matters, because touch-up work and a rebuild are very different conversations and it is worth knowing which one you are having. Common questions

My grout is cracking in the corner. Is the shower failing?

A crack in an inside corner usually means grout was used where silicone belongs, and the slab moved seasonally as it does across Houston. On its own it is a repair, not a failure. It becomes serious if water has been passing that joint for a long time. Signs of that appear as staining or soft drywall on the far side of the wall.

What keeps hard water film off the glass?

Mechanical removal beats chemistry. A squeegee after each shower removes the water before minerals dry on the surface. A factory or applied protective coating helps but wears and needs renewing. Avoid abrasive pads, which scratch coatings, and avoid strong acidic cleaners near natural stone, where they etch the surface permanently.

How often should the silicone be replaced?

It is a wear item, not a permanent seal. Replacement is driven by condition rather than a calendar: cut it out when it discolours, pulls away from the tile, or splits at a corner. In a heavily used family shower that tends to come around sooner than in a guest bath. Doing it promptly keeps water from tracking behind the joint.
