Looking at shower to tub conversion in Thompsons 77481? That’s around 20 miles from us, well inside the area we work daily.

A shower-to-tub conversion reads like a swap. It is really a drain job wearing a fixture, and the difficulty is set by the age of the house, not the tub. In a 1968 ranch off Chimney Rock the shower sits on a mud pan over cast iron in the slab and the supply may still be galvanised. In a 2006 Cypress house it is a moulded unit on a post-tension slab with PVC below. Same finished bathroom, different work. Here is where the two diverge.

Working in Thompsons

Thompsons is a very small Fort Bend County town near the Brazos south of Sugar Land, and there is no typical house here to describe honestly. It is rural — acreage, a limited number of homes, a wide spread of construction dates and building types, and a reasonable likelihood of private well and septic rather than city utilities. What that means in practice is that we approach projects here property by property rather than by neighborhood pattern. Water hardness, septic capacity if you are adding a bathroom rather than replacing one, service size at the panel, and how the structure is actually framed are all things we confirm on site instead of assuming. Elevation and floodplain status vary along the river corridor and should be checked for the specific parcel. The Gulf Coast constants still apply: expansive clay moves seasonally, humidity stays high year-round, and the details that manage both are what keep a remodel looking right in year five.

What we actually do

Water off at the stops, floor protection to an exterior door, dust wall at the opening, return-air grille taped shut. Base and lower wall tile come out with the backer so the drain, trap arm and valve body are visible before anything is ordered as final.

The drain is the pivot: a shower waste sits near the centre, a tub waste hard against one end, so the trap normally moves. In a slab house that means saw-cutting concrete, cutting back to sound pipe, setting a new trap and stub. Over joists the same move happens in the bay, which raises whether it can be done without notching structure. Then a tub-and-shower valve replaces the shower-only valve, with a clamped drop to the spout and riser to the head. Blocking and ledger, dry fit to confirm the rim is level and the tub floor falls to its waste, a full support bed under the tub, waste-and-overflow connected and water-tested. Backer board held clear of the tub flange, waterproofed, tiled, silicone at the tub joint.

Choosing materials

Tub material is the first fork. Enamelled steel is light and cheap, transmits noise, and chips if something heavy lands in it. Cast iron is quiet, holds heat and sits dead still, but it is heavy enough to matter on a second floor and hard to walk through a narrow 1960s hallway. Acrylic with a fibreglass backing is warm underfoot and forgiving to carry, but it only behaves if it is fully bedded; unsupported, it flexes at the drain.

Valves matter more than trim. A tub-and-shower valve has to be a pressure-balancing or thermostatic type, and in Houston’s hard water a ceramic-disc cartridge from a line whose parts stay available is worth more than a finish. Substrate is cement board or a bonded foam board, never paper-faced gypsum in the wet zone, with a liquid or sheet membrane on the face. Cementitious grout with a polymer works; the joint where tile meets tub gets silicone, because that joint moves.

Why this is different on the Gulf Coast

West of the Beltway, in Katy, Cypress and Fulshear stock from the mid-1980s on, slabs are often post-tensioned. Nobody cuts one to move a drain until a scanning company locates and marks the tendons; a cut tendon is a structural repair, not a plumbing repair. Inside the Loop the slab is usually conventionally reinforced, but the drain in it may be cast iron near the end of a long life, scaled and thin at the hub, better cut back than reused.

The clay under both moves with wet and dry seasons, which is why the tub-to-tile joint is flexible sealant and the inside corners get soft joints instead of hard grout. Humidity decides the rest: exhaust ducted to the outside rather than into the attic, insulated duct so it does not sweat and drip back, and plywood cabinet boxes rather than particleboard in the same room.

Where these jobs fail

The common failures are all avoidable. Setting an acrylic tub without its support bed leaves it flexing at the waste until the finish crazes and the drain connection weeps. Levelling a tub perfectly flat in both directions ignores the fall its own floor needs toward the waste. Running backer board down tight over the tub flange lets water track behind the flange instead of onto it; the board is held above the flange and the membrane laps down onto it.

Grouting the tub-to-tile joint is the one you see most: it cracks the first season the slab moves. Others are reusing the old shower valve, leaving a corroded cast iron stub in place because it looked serviceable, no access panel for the waste-and-overflow, no blocking for a grab bar while the wall is open, and tiling before the tub has been filled and the drain watched. In pre-1980s bathrooms, popcorn ceilings and old flooring get tested before they are disturbed rather than after.

What to expect

Walkthrough, written scope, then fixtures selected and on hand before demolition so a back-ordered tub cannot stall an open wall. Permits pulled where the work requires them. Demolition and drain exposure, plumbing rough and inspection where applicable, tub set and tested, board and membrane, tile, grout and silicone, trim and punch list. Each stage has a cure or an inspection behind it, so the schedule is a sequence rather than a guess. What moves the price

Whether the trap has to move, and what it has to move through, is the biggest single driver: a slab cut with tendon scanning is a different job from a joist bay you can reach. Age adds line items, because open walls in an older bathroom are the moment to replace galvanised supply, deal with a failing cast iron branch, or have an electrician look at aluminium branch wiring. Tub material and how it gets into the room count too, along with valve type, tile height and format, a niche, and any window in the wet wall. Permits and inspections apply to plumbing work, and unknowns behind old tile are real; allowing for them beats pretending they do not exist.

Common questions

Cast iron or acrylic in an older Houston house?

Cast iron is quieter and holds heat, but it is heavy and has to be carried through the house you already have. Acrylic is easier to place and performs well when it is fully bedded in its support material. In an upstairs bath the framing and the access route usually settle the argument before anything else does.

Can the tub go in without moving the drain?

Occasionally, if the existing waste lands where the tub's waste and overflow can reach it. More often it cannot, because a shower drain sits near the middle of the base and a tub drain sits at one end. The only way to know is to open the base and look at the actual trap position before committing to a fixture.

Does the slab always have to be cut?

Only when the trap has to move and the drain is buried in the slab. On a post-tension slab, common in western-suburb homes built from the mid-1980s onward, the concrete gets scanned and the tendons marked before any saw touches it. Second-floor and pier-and-beam bathrooms avoid the cut but bring joist limits instead.
