Shower to tub conversion for homes in Katy, TX 77494 — about 10 miles from our shop at 1530 W Sam Houston Pkwy N, Houston, TX 77043.

Two shower-to-tub conversions can differ by a wide margin and still look similar from the doorway. The money is not usually in the tub. It goes into what happens behind it, how far the plumbing has to move, and how the wall above it is built. This is a look at what a lean specification buys, what the middle adds, and where a higher budget genuinely changes how the bathroom behaves rather than how it photographs.

Scope of work

At every level the sequence is the same. Isolate and protect, strip the base and lower walls, expose the drain and valve, move the trap into the tub’s waste position, run the new tub-and-shower valve with a drop to the spout and a riser to the head, block and ledger the alcove, bed the tub, connect and test the waste-and-overflow, board and waterproof the walls, tile, seal and trim.

What changes with budget is the depth of each step. A lean job reuses supply lines that test sound and tiles to the height of the shower head. The middle replaces the supply in the open wall, tiles the alcove full height, and adds a recessed niche built into the waterproofing rather than cut into it afterwards. A higher specification adds a thermostatic valve with separate volume control, larger-format porcelain that demands a flatter substrate, a frameless glass panel with its own blocking, and a properly sized exhaust on a humidistat. Same order of operations; more of it done, and more of it done to tighter tolerance.

What gets specified

Entry level means an enamelled steel or basic acrylic alcove tub, a mainstream pressure-balancing valve with parts you can still buy in ten years, cement backer board with a rolled liquid membrane, and ceramic wall tile. That assembly, built correctly, is a sound bathroom.

The middle usually moves to a thicker acrylic or a lighter cast iron, a bonded board system or sheet membrane, and porcelain rather than ceramic. Porcelain absorbs less water and takes wear better at the tub line. Upper specification brings cast iron or a solid-surface tub, thermostatic mixing, large-format porcelain or stone, and glass. Stone is where care is needed: marble and limestone are moisture-sensitive and want a white polymer-modified mortar, a flat substrate and a waterproofing layer that is genuinely continuous, because a slow leak shows as a permanent shadow in the stone long before it shows anywhere else.

What Houston conditions demand

Money spent on the wet wall pays back here in a way it might not in a dry climate. Houston bathrooms sit in high humidity most of the year, so full-height tile over a continuous membrane and an exhaust fan that actually moves air to the outside are not luxury items; they decide whether the wall above the tub stays sound. Hard water is the other place specification shows: a glass panel with a factory-applied surface treatment stays clear longer than untreated glass, and a valve cartridge that resists scale is cheaper than a wall opened to change one that has seized.

Slab movement sets a floor under quality regardless of budget. Flexible sealant at the tub joint and soft joints in the corners belong on the cheapest version of this job, because clay does not care what was paid for the tile.

What we see in Katy

Katy covers a lot of ground. Parts sit in Harris County, parts in Fort Bend, parts in Waller, and only some addresses are actually inside the City of Katy — which affects who permits and inspects the work. The housing runs from late-1970s and 1980s neighborhoods through the master-planned build-out of the 1990s and 2000s and on into current construction. In the 80s and 90s homes we see oak cabinets, laminate counters, a garden tub with a narrow shower beside it, formal rooms nobody uses, and enough polybutylene supply piping that it is worth confirming before you commit to a bathroom. Homes that have taken water at some point come with different priorities: tile or a quality LVP instead of wood, outlets set higher than standard, closed-cell foam in place of batt. The clay moves here, so substrate flatness and movement joints get the same attention as the tile selection. Most neighborhoods have HOA architectural review.

Common mistakes

The expensive mistake is spending upward on visible things over an assembly that was not built for it. Large-format tile on a substrate that was fine for small ceramic will telegraph every low spot and crack at the hollow ones. A thermostatic valve fed by a galvanised line that is closing up with corrosion will never deliver its flow. Stone set over a membrane with pinholes at the corners will stain from the back and cannot be cleaned.

At the other end, cutting the wrong corners costs more than it saves: skipping the support bed under an acrylic tub, using paper-faced board in the wet zone, tiling only to shower-head height and leaving untreated gypsum above it in a humid room, or grouting the tub joint instead of sealing it. A lean specification should be lean in materials, not in the parts of the assembly that keep water out of the wall.

Where the budget goes

Drain relocation dominates: whether the trap moves, whether it moves through slab or joists, and whether the slab is post-tensioned and needs scanning. After that it is condition. Galvanised supply, a corroded cast iron branch or aluminium branch wiring in an older bathroom all add scope once the wall is open. Tub material and access route matter, and so does tile: format, layout, stone versus porcelain, and the substrate flatness a big tile demands. Glass, niches, benches and a humidistat exhaust each add. Permits and inspection for plumbing work apply. General price ranges are only meaningful after somebody has looked at the actual drain.

The process

Specification gets settled before demolition, because the tub decides the rough-in and the tile decides the substrate. Fixtures are on site before walls open. Then demolition, drain and supply rough with inspection where required, tub set and filled to test, board and waterproofing, tile and grout, silicone, trim, punch list. Where a higher specification is chosen, the extra time lands in substrate preparation and layout, not in the fixture. Common questions

Where does extra budget do the most good?

Usually in three places: the valve, the waterproofing system, and the exhaust. Those govern comfort, wall condition and how the room ages in Houston humidity, and all three are buried behind finished surfaces. Tile and trim can be upgraded later at moderate cost; the assembly behind them cannot.

Does stone work in a tub surround here?

It can, with the right setting materials and genuinely continuous waterproofing. Marble and limestone are moisture-sensitive, so a slow leak marks them permanently, and hard water leaves film that needs appropriate cleaners. Porcelain that reads like stone avoids most of that if the maintenance appetite is limited.

Is a cheaper tub a false economy?

Not automatically. A correctly bedded steel or acrylic tub in a properly waterproofed alcove is a sound installation. The false economy is spending on the tub while skimping on the wall behind it, the support bed under it, or the valve feeding it, since those are the parts that are expensive to reach again later.
