Shower pans get quoted three very different ways, and the price differences are not mostly about the tile you see. They are about the waterproofing method underneath, whether the drain stays where it is, and how much of the surrounding bathroom gets touched. A one-piece acrylic base in an existing alcove and a curbless tiled pan with a linear drain are both correctly described as a shower pan replacement. This walks the three tiers honestly, including what each one gives up, so the number on a proposal makes sense.

Why this is different on the Gulf Coast

The tier decision runs into slab-on-grade immediately. Curbless entries need drain height that a slab does not give you for free, so on a Houston slab the upper tier usually means cutting concrete, and on the post-tension slabs common in post-1985 western-suburb construction that means scanning before anyone cuts. Raising the bathroom floor instead is often the cleaner answer and changes door undercuts and thresholds. Humidity affects all three tiers equally: a bathroom that cannot clear moisture keeps every joint damp, so exhaust ducted outside and correctly sized belongs in the scope regardless of budget. Hard water shapes the upper tier in particular. Scale films frameless glass and etches it permanently if the glass is left untreated and unwiped, so a coated low-iron panel and realistic expectations about daily squeegee use are part of the specification rather than an upsell.

What we actually do

At the entry tier, the old pan comes out, the drain is adapted to a standard location, and a one-piece acrylic or solid-surface base is set in mortar with the bottom wall courses replaced and the base flange lapped behind the wall board. Fast, sound, and limited to stock sizes and a visible curb. The middle tier is the common rebuild: demolition to substrate, a pre-sloped foam tray or bonded mortar bed, a bonding-flange drain, a sheet or liquid membrane carried up the walls, a flood test that must hold, then tile, grout and sealant. The upper tier changes the geometry, not just the materials: a curbless or low-threshold entry, which on a slab requires either recessing the concrete or raising the surrounding floor, a linear drain along one wall so the pan slopes in a single direction and takes large-format tile cleanly, a bench or niches built and waterproofed as part of the pan, and frameless glass templated to the finished tile.

Choosing materials

Entry tier: an acrylic or solid-surface base, a compression or glue-in drain, cement board walls, and standard tile above. The compromise is fixed sizes, a curb, and a surface that scratches with abrasive cleaners. Middle tier: a pre-sloped foam tray or dry-pack mortar bed, a bonding-flange drain, and a bonded sheet or liquid waterproofing membrane rated as load-bearing, with treated board joints and a treated change of plane at every corner. This is the best value in this climate because water never reaches a saturated mortar layer. Upper tier: the same waterproofing plus a linear drain, a bonded bench, waterproofed niches, large-format porcelain that needs a flatter substrate and back-buttering, and frameless glass. Across all three, the things that fail in Houston are the same: paper-faced gypsum behind tile, unsealed changes of plane, undersized exhaust, and any pan design that lets water stand in a mortar layer instead of draining off a membrane.

What moves the price

Method drives the tier, and the drain drives the method. Keeping the drain at its existing location and height is the largest single saving available. Cutting concrete, transitioning cast iron in an older house, or moving to a linear drain all add a plumbing trade, permitting where required, and days. Curbless is the most expensive geometry on a slab, whichever route is taken. After that: pan size and shape, tile format, number of niches and benches, whether the wall tile stops at the pan or runs to the ceiling, and glass. Glass is often underestimated because it is templated only after tile is finished, so it lands late and carries its own lead time. Discovering rot or a wet cavity behind the old pan can move any tier.

What we see in Spring

A great deal of Spring was built in the 1970s and 1980s, and that era has a recognizable set of problems. Formal living and dining rooms that get no use. A kitchen walled off from everything. A primary bath with a shower you have to turn sideways in. Popcorn ceilings, and cedar or hardboard siding that has been painted more times than it should have been. Homes from that window can carry aluminum branch wiring, and the later ones can carry polybutylene supply lines, so we look before we scope. The newer sections toward the Grand Parkway are a different conversation — 2000s and later construction where the work is upgrade rather than repair. Mature trees are common here, and they pull moisture unevenly out of clay soil, which is one reason slab movement often shows up as binding doors and cracked grout on one side of a house and not the other. Most of Spring is unincorporated Harris County.

Where these jobs fail

Buying up on tile while buying down on waterproofing. Expensive porcelain over a badly built pan fails exactly as fast as cheap tile does. Second, choosing a linear drain without confirming the slope can be built to it, which on a slab with a fixed drain height sometimes cannot be done without raising the floor. Third, specifying curbless and discovering the concrete cutting late, after the budget is set. Fourth, a stock acrylic base in an out-of-square alcove, where the gap gets filled with sealant and becomes the failure point. Fifth, skipping the flood test to save a day, which is the only step that proves the pan before it is buried. Sixth, mixing systems, for example a foam tray from one manufacturer with a membrane and drain from another that are not tested together, which voids the warranties and leaves the transitions improvised.

What to expect

A site visit establishes drain condition, foundation type and alcove dimensions, which is what makes a tier realistic rather than aspirational. The build runs demolition, drain and any plumbing work, pan construction, waterproofing, a flood test that has to hold before tile, tile and grout, sealant, then glass templating and installation. Cure and set times between steps are fixed and cannot be compressed by adding labour. The shower stays out of service throughout, and where glass is included the final wait is fabrication, not site work. To price the three tiers against your actual bathroom, call (281) 235-6971.

Common questions

Can I have a curbless shower on a slab foundation?

Sometimes, by recessing the slab or by raising the surrounding bathroom floor to meet the pan. Recessing means cutting concrete, and on a post-tension slab that requires scanning first and careful planning. Neither route is a small change, so this decision belongs at the design stage rather than after demolition has started.

Where is the worst place to save money on this job?

The waterproofing method, the flood test, and the exhaust fan. All three are invisible in the finished shower and all three decide whether it lasts. Tile format, niche count and glass style can all be adjusted down without consequence. A pan built without a held flood test is the one thing that cannot be checked afterwards.

Is an acrylic base a downgrade?

It is a different product, not a failure. A one-piece base has no grout in the pan and nothing for water to sit in, which is a real advantage. The trade-offs are stock sizes, a curb, a manufactured surface, and a floor that scratches if cleaned with abrasives. In a fixed alcove with a standard layout it is a sound choice.
