Not every kitchen that wants shaker doors needs new cabinets. If the boxes are sound and the layout works, refacing puts new shaker doors, drawer fronts and matching veneer on the existing face frames with far less disruption. If the boxes are swollen, out of square, or in the wrong places, refacing is money spent making bad cabinets look new, and the doors will never hang straight. The decision is not about taste. It is a handful of checks on the boxes themselves, and in Houston two of those checks are about water and slab movement.
What the work involves
The assessment comes first: pull a drawer and read the box material at the cut edge, check the sink base floor for swelling or staining, test the face frames for square, load a shelf and look for sag, and run a level along the run to see how much the slab has moved under it. If the boxes pass, refacing removes doors, fronts and hinges, cleans and sands the face frames, applies matching veneer or a rail-and-stile skin to every exposed frame and end panel, then hangs new shaker doors and fronts on new concealed hinges, with new undermount runners where the existing drawer boxes allow. Interiors can be relined. Toe kicks, light rail and crown are replaced to match. If the boxes fail, the scope becomes a full replacement: demolition, wall and floor repair, a fresh level layout, new boxes hung to a benchmark line, then fillers, countertop template, hookups, doors and trim.
What goes wrong, and how it is avoided
Refacing boxes that failed the checks. New doors on a swollen sink base or a racked run give uneven reveals and loose hinge screws inside a year. Second, skipping the level read, so nobody discovers the run has moved until the new fronts are on. Third, refacing a layout the household already dislikes, which delivers a good-looking kitchen with the same bad work triangle. Fourth, veneering only what is visible from the doorway and leaving an unfinished end panel or an old-finish interior beside a new door. Fifth, reusing old drawer boxes with side-mount runners while fitting new undermounts, which will not fit without the right box height and notching. Sixth, thermofoil beside a range or dishwasher, where heat and steam lift the edges. Seventh, on a full replacement, demolishing before confirming what the soffit and the sink drain actually are.
What drives the cost
Refacing costs materially less than replacement mainly because it removes demolition, wall repair, countertop replacement and most plumbing and electrical work from the scope. The gap narrows fast once you add exposed end panels, new drawer boxes, interior relining, and any layout change, because a single moved cabinet usually means the countertop comes off, and once the countertop is off much of the saving is gone. On the replacement side the drivers are the familiar ones: whether the sink moves, whether a soffit comes down, box construction, finish grade, and ceiling height. Kitchen size matters in both directions, since refacing scales with linear feet of frame and door count rather than with box count.
Materials and specification
Refacing lives or dies on the skin. Wood veneer with a matching hardwood rail-and-stile overlay on the face frames reads as real cabinetry; thin rigid thermofoil applied over old frames does not, and it lifts near heat sources like a range or a dishwasher vent in this climate. New doors should be specified the same way as for a full replacement: MDF centre panels in a hardwood frame for paint, solid or veneer panels for stain, with a factory catalysed finish rather than site paint. Exposed end panels get full skins, not a strip. On the replacement side, plywood boxes and a sealed, lined sink base are the two specifications that stop this conversation happening again in a decade. In both cases the hinges and runners are new: six-way adjustable concealed hinges and undermount full-extension soft-close runners from a mainstream line so parts remain available.
Building for Gulf Coast conditions
Two local conditions decide most of these calls. The first is the sink base. Houston humidity plus any slow drip under a disposal or a supply stop turns a melamine-faced particleboard floor into a swollen, crumbling deck, and that damage spreads to the box sides and the hinge screw holes. A swollen sink base is common in 1990s and 2000s tract kitchens and it is the most frequent reason a reface gets ruled out. The second is slab movement. Clay soil lifts and drops runs over the years, and a kitchen where the base run has racked shows it in a cabinet that is out of square. New doors on a racked frame have uneven reveals no hinge adjustment can hide. Older inner-Houston kitchens add a third question: whether the layout is worth keeping at all, given cast iron drains and soffits that constrain any move.
Fulshear homes and this work
Fulshear has a small original town and a very large amount of construction built around it, most of it from roughly the 2010s onward. That changes what a remodeler does here. You are rarely chasing cast iron or galvanized pipe; you are upgrading a house that is structurally fine but finished to a builder’s budget. Common requests: replacing the builder shower surround with a full tile primary bath, real cabinetry instead of the original boxes, an outdoor kitchen and covered patio, finishing out a flex or game room, and lighting that was never planned properly. The one thing newer construction does not fix is the ground. These slabs sit on the same expansive clay, and a young slab on a recently cleared and graded lot still moves seasonally, which is why substrate prep and movement joints matter as much on a 2016 house as a 1966 one. Expect architectural review in most neighborhoods, and county permitting outside city limits.
How we work
An in-person assessment covers box material, sink base condition, square, shelf sag and the level read, and produces a straight recommendation either way. A reface runs as a short, largely dust-free job: templating and ordering, then a removal and veneer day or two, then doors, fronts, hardware and trim, with the kitchen usable most evenings. A replacement runs the longer sequence of demolition, repairs, layout, install, countertop template and fabrication wait, hookups, then doors and trim. Either way the boxes and doors are stored in the conditioned house before install. To have the boxes assessed before deciding, call (281) 235-6971.
Common questions
Can I move one cabinet and reface the rest?
Sometimes, but check the countertop first. Moving a cabinet usually means the counter comes off, and stone rarely survives removal in one piece. Once a new countertop is in the scope, much of the cost advantage of refacing disappears and full replacement deserves a fresh look.
How do I tell plywood boxes from particleboard without tools?
Open a drawer and look at the raw edge under the front, or at the underside of a shelf. Plywood shows thin continuous layers; particleboard shows a compressed field of chips. Melamine-faced particleboard has a white or grey plastic surface with a taped edge. Plywood boxes are the strongest single argument for refacing rather than replacing.
Can refacing fix cabinets that sit unevenly from slab movement?
Not really. Refacing changes the skin, not the position. If a base run has racked, new doors will show tapered reveals across the run. Some runs can be unfastened, reshimmed to a level benchmark line and refastened before refacing, which is worth doing where the boxes themselves are still square and sound.
