The same insert that drops straight into a 2008 Katy kitchen will fight you in a 1974 Memorial-area kitchen, and the reason is construction, not quality. Older Houston cabinets are typically face-frame: a solid frame across the front narrows the opening, the drawer boxes ride on centre-mount or three-quarter-extension side-mount slides, and after fifty years of slab movement, few of them are square front to back. Newer suburban cabinets are usually frameless, with full-extension undermount slides and boxes that are still true. Organising both is entirely doable. The measuring, the hardware decisions and the amount of adjustment involved are just very different, and it is worth knowing which house you are in.

Sugar Land homes and this work

Sugar Land spans more than people expect. There is the old company-town core near the former refinery with genuinely early housing, Sugar Creek from the 1970s and 80s, First Colony built out through the late 1980s and 90s, and New Territory, Telfair and Riverstone from the 1990s and 2000s onward. Practically, much of our work here is on the First Colony generation, which has reached the age where kitchens, primary baths, roofing and HVAC all come due within a few years of each other. Those homes are worth investing in — good ceiling height, sound structure, dated finishes and closed-off plans. Sugar Land has its own building department, and most neighborhoods run active HOA architectural review for anything visible from the street. Post-tension slabs are common in the newer sections, which matters any time an anchor, a plumbing relocation, or a saw cut is on the table; those cables are located before anyone cuts, not after.

What we actually do

In a face-frame kitchen the work starts with honest measurement: net box interior at front, middle and back, and usable height under the frame rail above, not just under the counter. If the drawer runs on a centre-mount slide, the rear third of the box is effectively hard to reach and the load rating is low, so the conversation quickly becomes whether to convert to modern slides. That conversion needs rear mounting brackets because there is no cabinet side flush with the opening, and it often needs the box rebuilt to the correct width for the clearance the new slides demand. In a frameless kitchen the box is usually already on undermount slides at a known clearance, so the work is measuring the net opening, allowing for the rear locking clip, and cutting the insert. In both cases inserts are dry-fit, adjusted, then finished or installed, and the drawer is cycled under load before the job is called complete.

Choosing materials

In older kitchens the material decisions are mostly hardware. Modern undermount ball-bearing slides in a suitable load class, with the rear brackets needed for face-frame mounting, transform how the kitchen works far more than any insert does. Where the original box is solid wood and sound, keep it and replace the bottom with plywood if it sags. Where it is particleboard and swollen, replace it with a dovetailed maple or birch box. Inserts themselves should be solid maple or birch, finished on all faces, cut with an expansion allowance for humidity, and dimensioned to the smallest of the three width measurements when a box is out of square. In newer kitchens the boxes are usually fine, so the money goes into inserts and, occasionally, into upgrading light-duty slides under a pot drawer. Moulded trays remain a sensible choice in either vintage for ordinary utensil drawers, and they are indifferent to humidity.

Why this is different on the Gulf Coast

Age plus climate produces specific conditions in older stock. Fifty years of slab movement over expansive clay racks cabinet runs, so face frames go slightly out of plumb and drawer boxes go out of square, which is why an insert cut to the front measurement jams halfway. Original 1960s and 70s boxes are often solid wood with a hardboard bottom, which is better than the particleboard used in the 1980s and 90s but sags under weight. In houses that have taken flood water, the lower drawer banks are the first place to check, because a swollen bottom or a delaminated side is a replacement. Newer western-suburb cabinets have their own issue: plenty of 2000s builder runs used particleboard boxes with thin melamine, and in this humidity a dishwasher weep or a slow supply drip swells them permanently. In both vintages the drawer bank next to the dishwasher ages fastest from vented steam.

Where these jobs fail

In older cabinets the recurring error is treating the opening as rectangular. Measure at the front only and the insert binds at the back. The second is assuming an insert can be added without touching the slides, then loading a heavy layout onto centre-mount hardware that was rated for cutlery. The third is converting to undermount slides without accounting for the required clearance per side, so the drawer either binds or rattles. The fourth is forgetting the rear locking clip and cutting the insert to full box depth. In newer cabinets the recurring error is different: assuming a factory-standard width and ordering to nominal dimensions instead of measuring the actual net opening, which varies by manufacturer. Common to both is screwing through the drawer bottom into slide hardware, and fitting wood dividers tight in a climate that will swell them. All of it is avoided by measuring the box you actually have.

What to expect

We open drawers, identify the hardware, check squareness front to back, and press the bottoms for sag. That tells us whether this is an insert job, a hardware job, or a box job, and those are very different prices. Measurements are taken at three points per drawer and recorded against the actual contents you want stored. Inserts are fabricated to those numbers, dry-fitted, adjusted for the out-of-square reality of an older cabinet, then installed and cycled under load. It is clean work with no demolition and minimal disruption. Call MS Home Remodeling at (281) 235-6971 if you want your existing cabinets assessed.

What moves the price

Cabinet construction is the first driver. Face-frame retrofits cost more than frameless for the same visible result because of rear brackets, notching, out-of-square correction and more adjustment time. Whether slides are being upgraded is the second, and whether drawer boxes are being replaced is the third and largest. After that it is quantity, insert complexity, species and finish. Converting a door-and-shelf base cabinet to a drawer bank is its own scope, since it needs new boxes, slides, fronts and sometimes rework of the centre stile. Cabinets that have racked with slab movement add labour. Odd widths, very deep drawers and tiered inserts all add. Any range depends almost entirely on which of these the kitchen needs, which is why it gets quoted after a look rather than over the phone.

Common questions

How do I tell whether my cabinets are face-frame or frameless?

Open a door and look at the front edge of the cabinet. If there is a solid wood frame across the opening that the door closes against, it is face-frame, typical of older Houston stock. If the door covers the cabinet edge and you see only the box sides and shelf edges, it is frameless, typical of 2000s and later construction. It changes the hardware options.

Can my old drawers be converted to full-extension soft-close?

Often yes. Face-frame cabinets need rear mounting brackets because there is no cabinet side at the opening, and the drawer box has to be the right width for the clearance the slides require, which sometimes means a new box. It is one of the highest-value upgrades in an older kitchen because it makes the rear third of every drawer usable again.

Are 2000s builder cabinets worth adding organisers to?

Usually. The boxes are typically square and already on decent slides, so inserts fit cleanly. The exception is particleboard boxes with melamine facing that have taken water, most often at the sink base or beside the dishwasher, where the bottom swells and never recovers. Check those specific drawers before spending money on inserts for the run.

Can a base cabinet with doors and a shelf be converted to drawers?

Yes, and it is a common upgrade because drawers make deep base cabinets genuinely usable. It requires new boxes, new slides, new fronts matched to the existing doors, and on face-frame cabinets sometimes rework around the centre stile. Matching an existing finish exactly is the limiting factor, so it is worth discussing before committing to a partial conversion.
