Houston 77003 sits about 18 miles from our shop, and kitchen countertop replacement is work we do there regularly.

Not every damaged countertop needs to go. A chip at the sink rim, a dull patch where hard water sat, a seam that has opened a hair, a scorch beside the cooktop, and a crack running across the dishwasher opening are five different problems with five different answers. Some are a morning’s work with colour-matched epoxy and a polishing pad. Others are structural and will come back no matter how well they are filled. The deciding factors are the material, where the damage sits relative to a cutout, and whether the cabinets underneath have moved. This page walks the honest decision rather than pushing you toward new slabs.

Houston homes and this work

Houston is not one housing stock, so it is not one kind of remodel. In the Heights and Woodland Heights you are often working on 1910s–1930s wood-frame homes on pier-and-beam, where leveling, sill and joist repair, and original wiring long past its service life come before anything cosmetic — and where a home in a designated historic district brings design review with it. Montrose, Oak Forest and Garden Oaks add mid-century layers. Meyerland, Westbury, Braeswood and Sharpstown are largely 1950s–60s slab ranch: cast iron drains near the end of their life, galvanized supply, single-pane windows, popcorn ceilings that should be tested before they are disturbed. Memorial and Alief lean 1970s–80s, which brings aluminum branch wiring and polybutylene supply into the conversation. West of Beltway 8 you are usually in 2000s and 2010s construction, where the job is upgrade rather than repair. Houston has no zoning, but plumbing, electrical and structural work is permitted, and deed restrictions still govern a great deal.

What we actually do

Assessment comes first, and it is done with the sink base open. We look at the damage, then at what caused it: a crack is read against the cutout geometry and the cabinet run below, checked with a long level, because a crack across the narrow bridge in front of a dishwasher usually means the run is no longer flat rather than that someone dropped something. Repairs that work are specific. Chips at an edge or sink rim are cleaned, filled with tinted epoxy or acrylic matched wet, then razor-levelled and polished back to the surrounding sheen. Open seams are raked, refilled and re-polished. Etched marble is honed and re-polished. Dull granite gets a diamond polish pass and fresh impregnating sealer. Solid surface is genuinely repairable, since scratches and even burns sand out and re-blend. Butcher block sands and re-oils. Replacement is the removal, levelling, templating and setting sequence, and it is the honest answer when a crack is through-body across a span, when quartz has scorched deeply, or when the deck below has failed.

Choosing materials

Repairability varies enormously by material, and that is worth knowing before you buy your next top. Solid surface is the most forgiving, because it is homogeneous through its thickness, so scratches, stains and even burns sand out and re-blend invisibly. Butcher block is next: sand, re-oil, done. Granite polishes and re-seals well, and small chips fill convincingly because the pattern is busy enough to disguise a repair. Quartz is harder, since the resin binder means a filled chip can read slightly different in sheen, and a deep scorch is essentially permanent because the burn is in the resin. Marble hones and re-polishes beautifully, which is why etching is a maintenance item rather than a failure. Porcelain and sintered slabs resist almost everything but chip at edges, and those chips are difficult to fill because some products have no through-body colour. Laminate is not practically repairable at a worn edge or a delaminated seam.

Why this is different on the Gulf Coast

Houston pushes several of these decisions. Slab movement over expansive clay is the main reason countertops crack here without impact: the base cabinets rack slightly over a few seasons, and stone, which does not bend, gives up at its narrowest section, almost always the bridge in front of the dishwasher or the strip between a sink cutout and the front edge. Filling that crack without re-levelling and re-supporting the run means it reopens. Hard water is the other one. Scale films on polished dark granite get mistaken for permanent damage when they are usually a mineral deposit that comes off, and the dullness underneath is a worn polish rather than ruined stone. Humidity decides the substrate question: if there has been a slow supply or drain leak in the sink base, the particleboard deck under the stone will be swollen, and no top repair fixes a deck that is no longer flat or sound.

Where these jobs fail

The largest one is repairing a movement crack as if it were an impact crack. Epoxy fills the gap and the underlying cause keeps working, so it reopens along the same line, often within a year. The correct sequence is to re-level and re-support the cabinet run first, then rod, pin or fill, and to accept the repair will stay faintly visible. Second is aggressive cleaning: acidic descalers on marble etch it permanently, and abrasive pads on polished granite leave a dull patch that then needs machine polishing. Third is sealing quartz, which does not need it and can leave a hazy residue. Fourth is filling a chip with an unmatched product, since colour must be matched wet and cured, not dry. Fifth is repairing a top while ignoring a swollen sink deck below, which guarantees the same failure returns. Sixth is replacing a top without establishing why the old one failed, which just sets an expensive slab onto the same unlevel run.

What to expect

We look at the damage, open the sink base, and put a long level across the run before saying anything about whether it is repairable. If it is, we tell you what the repair will look like when cured, because a filled chip in quartz is visible under raking light and you should decide with that in front of you. If the cause is movement or a failed deck, we say so and price both paths. Repairs are done in place with dust control. Replacements follow the full disconnection, demolition, levelling, template and install sequence. Call (281) 235-6971 for an honest look before committing to either.

What moves the price

Repair cost turns on access, matching, and whether polishing equipment has to come in. A chip fill is small work. Machine polishing a run, or honing and re-polishing marble, is a longer visit with dust control. Structural repairs cost more because the cabinets must be re-levelled and sometimes reinforced first. On the replacement side the drivers are material group, slab yield across your layout, seam and miter count, edge profile, cutout count, sink type, demolition of the existing surface, and any discovered substrate replacement. The dividing line is usually simple: if the top failed for a reason that will recur, or if the repair will stay conspicuous in a sight line you use daily, money spent repairing tends to be money spent twice.

Common questions

Is it worth replacing just one damaged section?

Rarely, because a new piece from a different slab will not match the old one in pattern or in how the polish has aged, and the join becomes the thing you look at. It can work where a run is already broken by a range or a corner. Otherwise replacing the whole run reads far better.

Can a cracked quartz countertop be repaired?

A hairline can be cleaned and filled with colour-matched epoxy, and it will be less visible but rarely invisible. The real question is why it cracked. If the crack runs across the narrow section in front of the dishwasher, the cabinet run has moved, and that run needs levelling and support before any filling, or the crack simply returns.

My granite looks dull and cloudy. Is it ruined?

Usually not. Houston's hard water leaves a mineral film that reads as haze, and years of abrasive cleaners wear the polish beneath it. A deposit remover followed by a machine polish and a fresh impregnating sealer often brings back most of the depth. Genuinely worn polish needs a diamond pass, not a bottle of product.
