The part nobody plans for is the six weeks of not having a kitchen. New cabinets are not a difficult idea, but they are a long disruption in the busiest room in the house, and how well that goes depends almost entirely on what was decided before demo day. Where the fridge lives. Where you wash dishes. When the water is off and for how long. Where several thousand dollars of finished doors sit while they wait for install, which in Houston is not the garage. Here is the honest version of what happens week by week and how to make it survivable.
Scope of work
Before anything comes out, we set up containment. Plastic barriers at the openings into the kitchen, floor protection along the path to the door, and a plan for where debris leaves. Appliances get disconnected. The water gets shut off long enough to cap the sink supplies and drain, and the disposal circuit gets isolated. Demo pulls cabinets, countertop and usually the backsplash, and on older homes the walls behind them are rarely flat. Then comes the unglamorous middle: drywall repair, any electrical changes for outlets and undercabinet lighting, plumbing rough if the sink moves, and inspection where the work calls for it. Cabinets are delivered and stored inside the conditioned house, not the garage. Installation sets base cabinets to a laser line with shims, scribes them to out-of-square walls, anchors into studs, then hangs uppers. The countertop is templated on the installed bases, so there is a gap while it is fabricated. Sink, plumbing connections, appliances, backsplash, hardware and trim close it out.
Common mistakes
Ordering cabinets before appliances are chosen. Openings are built to specific appliance dimensions and changing a range or a fridge afterward means rebuilding a cabinet. Second, not field verifying after demo. Walls that were assumed straight rarely are, particularly in 1960s and 70s houses. Third, taking delivery of cabinets before the site is ready, so they sit in the way and get damaged. Fourth, planning a temporary kitchen without a sink and dish plan, which is what actually makes families give up and eat out for six weeks. Fifth, ignoring the countertop template gap, so the sink is disconnected far longer than expected. Sixth, running demo without containment, which puts fine dust through the whole house and into the air handler. Seventh, scheduling the job over a period when nobody can be there to make decisions, since install week generates small questions daily and stalled decisions stall the trades.
Where the budget goes
Linear footage and door count first. Box material, door style, and whether the doors are overlay or inset, since inset takes more shop time and more careful installation. Finish, with colour-matched painted finishes taking longer than stained. Layout changes are the biggest lever, because moving a sink or a range brings plumbing or electrical, and in a slab home relocating a drain can mean concrete. Soffit removal, ceiling-height uppers, appliance panels and interior accessories all add. Site conditions matter, so out-of-plumb walls, uneven floors and surprises behind old cabinets add labour. Protecting and repairing existing flooring adds too, particularly if the old cabinets sat on top of it.
What gets specified
What you specify affects the disruption, not just the result. Cabinets built and finished in a shop arrive done, which keeps spray finishing and its fumes out of your house. On-site finishing means days of masking, smell and cure time, and in Houston humidity a slower cure. Plywood boxes weigh more and handle the install better than particleboard, which can crush at the screw when clamped and shimmed. Countertop choice sets the wait, since stone is templated after cabinets are set and fabricated on the shop schedule, whereas a wood or laminate top can go in sooner. Undercabinet lighting and outlet relocation are decided before the walls close, not after. Appliance specifications need to be final before cabinet shop drawings are approved, because a fridge that is an inch wider than assumed becomes a cabinet modification on install day.
What Houston conditions demand
Two Houston-specific logistics. First, do not store finished cabinets or doors in the garage. A Houston garage in August swings through heat and humidity that no conditioned shop finish was cured for, and doors can move or the finish can suffer before they are ever hung. They go in a conditioned room, even if that room is the dining room for a month. Second, if you are relocating the fridge as your temporary kitchen, the garage is a poor choice for the same reason. A refrigerator in an uninsulated Houston garage in summer runs constantly and may not hold temperature. Put it in a hallway or a nearby room on its own circuit. Also expect the house to feel humid during demo, since containment cuts airflow, so run the air handler and keep bathroom fans working.
What we see in Simonton
Simonton is a small city along the Brazos corridor west of Fulshear, and it is largely rural — acreage, custom homes of varying ages, some manufactured housing, private well and septic in many cases. Because of where it sits, elevation and water-resistant construction come up in conversation far more often here than they would on an inner-loop remodel. That pushes material choices in a particular direction: tile or a quality LVP instead of wood flooring, outlets set higher than standard, closed-cell foam rather than batt insulation where an assembly could get wet, and cabinet boxes that will not disintegrate if they do. Hard well water also shapes fixture and shower glass selection. We do not generalize about individual properties out here — lots vary, elevations vary, and what is right for one address on a road may not be right for the next one. Floodplain and permitting requirements should be confirmed for the specific parcel before design work starts.
The process
Design and appliance selection, then shop drawings approved against verified dimensions. Containment and protection, demo, then wall and floor repair. Electrical and plumbing rough with inspection where required. Cabinet delivery into conditioned storage. Install base cabinets to a laser line, then uppers. Countertop template, fabrication wait, then countertop and sink. Backsplash, hardware, trim, appliances, adjustments. We tell you up front where the two waiting periods are, which are the shop lead time before delivery and the countertop fabrication after install, because those are what stretch a kitchen job. Common questions
How long am I without a kitchen sink?
From demo until the countertop is installed and plumbed, which includes the fabrication wait after templating. That is the single longest stretch of the job. Set up a washing station elsewhere before demo, usually a bathroom or a laundry sink, and keep a drying rack there. We can sometimes leave a temporary sink connection in place, but not once the base cabinets come out.
Where should the fridge and microwave go?
Somewhere conditioned and on a circuit that will not trip. A hallway, dining room or garage-adjacent utility space works. Avoid an uninsulated Houston garage in summer, since the compressor runs constantly and food safety becomes a real question. A folding table with a microwave, a kettle and a toaster oven covers most meals. Plan the extension cord routing so nobody trips over it daily.
How bad is the dust?
Demo is the worst day, and containment is what decides whether it stays in the kitchen. Plastic barriers at every opening, floor protection on the exit path, and running the air handler with a fresh filter afterwards. Expect some fine dust regardless. Anything you cannot bear to clean should come out of the adjoining rooms before demo starts.
Can we live in the house during the job?
Most families do. The hard parts are the sink outage, the daily noise during demo and install weeks, and having the kitchen inaccessible. If someone works from home, plan around the noisy days. Pets need a plan for the days the doors are open for deliveries and debris removal, since that is when they get out.
