Looking at bathroom niche installation in Fulshear 77441? That’s around 16 miles from us, well inside the area we work daily.

Niches fail in a small number of repeatable ways, and almost all of them trace back to decisions made before the tile went on. A flat sill. Corners waterproofed with membrane but no reinforcing band. A niche cut into a bay with a drain line in it, then re-routed badly. Grout used where silicone belongs. None of these show up at the final walk-through — they show up months later as a dark grout line, a loose tile on the sill, or a soft spot in the ceiling below. This is the failure list, and what each one actually takes to avoid.

Scope of work

Failure one: no slope on the sill. Water sits, soap film builds, grout stays saturated, and the sill tile eventually debonds. Prevented by pitching the substrate roughly a quarter inch per foot toward the shower before waterproofing, not by sloping thinset under the tile afterward.

Failure two: unbanded corners. A niche adds eight or more inside corners to a shower. Membrane alone bridging a corner is thin exactly where the assembly moves most. Every change of plane gets reinforcing band before the field membrane goes on.

Failure three: the membrane laps the wrong way. Waterproofing has to shed downward and outward into the shower. A niche detailed so water can travel behind the wall membrane is a slow leak with a long fuse.

Failure four: grout in the corners. Grout is rigid, corners move, the joint cracks and takes on water. Changes of plane get 100 percent silicone in a matched color.

Failure five: the bay was not verified. Cutting into a stud bay and discovering a vent stack mid-demo leads to improvised solutions. Opening and verifying before committing avoids the improvisation entirely.

Failure six: rushing cure time on liquid membrane so the tile crew can start. There is no way to make that up later.

Where the budget goes

Doing the details right is not where the money goes. Banding corners, pitching a sill, and using silicone instead of grout are hours, not thousands. What moves the number is what the wall holds and what you ask the tile to do.

A bay occupied by a drain, vent, or supply line is the largest single swing, because it converts a tile detail into a plumbing scope. On slab-on-grade houses the reroute typically goes overhead. Widening past one stud bay adds framing and a header. Retrofitting a niche into an already-tiled shower brings demo, membrane repair done properly rather than patched, and the real risk that the existing tile is discontinued.

Then finish decisions: single-slab sill versus tiled, mitered porcelain edges versus a metal profile, mosaic versus large-format back panel, and whether lighting is involved. Repair work on a failed niche someone else built is nearly always more than building one correctly the first time, because the wall behind it has to be opened and assessed.

What Houston conditions demand

Houston adds two failure modes that a drier climate mostly forgives.

The first is the exterior-wall niche. Removing insulation from a stud bay on an exterior wall creates a thermally weak pocket with conditioned air inside and hot, saturated Gulf air outside. Condensation forms where you cannot see it or dry it. The tile can be perfect and the assembly still fails. This is why interior partitions are the default here, and why closed-cell foam behind the box is the minimum when there is genuinely no alternative.

The second is that a niche never dries. Our year-round humidity means residual moisture stays on the sill essentially between showers, so any design flaw that leaves standing water is amplified. That is also why exhaust capacity is part of the niche conversation rather than a separate line item — an undersized fan turns a well-built niche into a mildew shelf.

Hard water compounds it. Scale accumulates fastest on horizontal wet surfaces, and honed marble sills etch under the acidic cleaners people reach for to remove it. Polished porcelain or quartz tolerates the maintenance the water here requires.

Fulshear homes and this work

Fulshear has a small original town and a very large amount of construction built around it, most of it from roughly the 2010s onward. That changes what a remodeler does here. You are rarely chasing cast iron or galvanized pipe; you are upgrading a house that is structurally fine but finished to a builder’s budget. Common requests: replacing the builder shower surround with a full tile primary bath, real cabinetry instead of the original boxes, an outdoor kitchen and covered patio, finishing out a flex or game room, and lighting that was never planned properly. The one thing newer construction does not fix is the ground. These slabs sit on the same expansive clay, and a young slab on a recently cleared and graded lot still moves seasonally, which is why substrate prep and movement joints matter as much on a 2016 house as a 1966 one. Expect architectural review in most neighborhoods, and county permitting outside city limits.

The process

Every job starts by opening and verifying rather than assuming. Once the bay is confirmed, blocking goes in, the box is built with the sill already pitched, and the waterproofing sequence runs in order: corners banded, membrane applied, cure time respected. On liquid systems the film gets checked rather than eyeballed.

Tile follows the field layout so the opening lands on grout lines. The sill goes in as a single piece where possible. Corners get silicone, faces get grout, and the whole assembly gets left alone long enough to cure before the shower is used.

If you are calling about a niche that is already leaking, the first step is not tile. It is finding out how far the water traveled, which usually means opening the wall or the ceiling below. We would rather tell you that up front than quote a tile repair over an unknown.

Common questions

Is a niche in an exterior wall really a problem in Houston?

It is a real risk rather than a guaranteed failure. You are thinning the insulation in a wall that faces heat and heavy humidity for most of the year, and the resulting cold pocket sits behind tile where you cannot inspect or dry it. When the layout forces it, closed-cell foam behind the box and honest attention to bathroom ventilation are the mitigations. An interior wall avoids the question.

How long should waterproofing cure before tile?

It depends on the system, the product, the film thickness, and the conditions in the room — and in a humid Houston bathroom it takes longer than the label's ideal-condition figure. The practical answer is that we follow the manufacturer's requirement for the actual conditions rather than the schedule, and we do not compress it to keep a tile crew moving. Cure time skipped cannot be recovered afterward.

My niche shelf grout is always dark and never dries. What is wrong?

Almost always a flat sill with no pitch, sometimes combined with an undersized exhaust fan. Water sits in the grout joint and never fully leaves, especially at our humidity. Regrouting will not fix it because the geometry is the problem. The durable repair is rebuilding the sill with slope, ideally as a single slab with no joint across the wet surface.

The tile on my niche sill came loose. Can it just be reset?

Sometimes, but a loose sill tile is usually a symptom. Water got behind it, which means either the waterproofing is compromised or the sill never shed water. Resetting the tile over a wet substrate buys a few months. The right first step is to pull the tile, see whether the substrate is saturated, and decide from actual evidence rather than resetting and hoping.
