Looking at bathroom niche installation in Cypress 77433? That’s around 14 miles from us, well inside the area we work daily.

A shower niche is a hole cut into a wall that gets soaked several times a day. That single sentence explains why a good one costs more labor than its size suggests, and why a bad one shows up as a stain on the other side of the wall two years later. The tile is the last five percent of the work. Everything that determines whether the niche lasts happens before a single piece of tile is set: whether the stud bay was clear, whether the sill got a slope, whether the inside corners were banded before the membrane went on. Here is what actually happens from open wall to finished shelf.

Working in Cypress

Cypress is mostly unincorporated northwest Harris County, and the housing reflects a building push that ran from the 1990s straight through the 2010s. Post-tension slab, brick across the front, two stories, a tall entry, a garden tub the family stopped using years ago, and cabinet boxes that are particleboard behind a solid door. That last detail matters in this climate: particleboard swells if a supply line weeps or a dishwasher leaks, and it does not come back. When we rebuild a kitchen here we move to plywood boxes. The rest of the pattern is predictable and fixable — builder carpet, a wall between the kitchen and family room that no longer makes sense, a formal dining room nobody eats in. These are newer homes, but they sit on the same expansive clay as everything else, so substrate flatness and movement joints still decide whether your tile looks right in year five. Most neighborhoods have deed restrictions and architectural review for exterior changes.

What we actually do

The wall gets opened first, because nobody can promise a niche location from the outside of a finished wall. Stud bays in Houston homes carry vent stacks, supply lines, HVAC flex, and sometimes a low-voltage run nobody documented. Once the bay is confirmed clear, backer board is cut back to the studs and horizontal blocking is added top and bottom so the box has something solid to fasten to.

The box itself is either built on site from cement board or Hardie, or set as a preformed foam unit. Either way the sill is pitched roughly a quarter inch per foot back into the shower so water leaves instead of sitting. That slope is built into the substrate, not faked with extra thinset later.

Waterproofing follows: inside corners and every change of plane get reinforcing band, then the membrane runs over the whole box and laps onto the surrounding wall waterproofing so there is no seam pointing uphill. Liquid-applied membrane gets its film thickness checked; sheet membrane gets rolled out.

Tile is laid out so the niche opening lands on field-tile grout lines rather than cutting a course in half. Back panel first, then sides, then the sill. The sill is usually a single piece of stone or quartz with no grout joint across it. Changes of plane get color-matched silicone, not grout, because grout in a moving corner cracks.

Why this is different on the Gulf Coast

The first Houston-specific decision is which wall. Putting a niche in an exterior wall means removing most of the insulation depth in a wall that has 95-degree, saturated air pressing on the other side for a good part of the year. You end up with a cold cavity behind tile in an air-conditioned bathroom, which is how you get condensation in a place you cannot see or dry. Interior partition walls are the better home for a niche here. When the layout genuinely leaves no choice, the back of the box gets closed-cell foam so there is no cold spot behind the tile.

The second is drying time. Our humidity means a shower does not fully dry between uses the way it would in a dry climate. A flat niche shelf holds a film of water essentially all day, which is how soap scum and mildew get their start. Slope is not a nicety here, and neither is real exhaust capacity in the room.

Third, hard water. Scale builds on the sill faster than on vertical surfaces. Honed marble sills etch and spot under Houston water. Polished porcelain and quartz shed it better and take an acidic cleaner without going dull.

What to expect

It starts with looking at the actual shower and sounding the wall, not with a picture. We agree on height, width, centering, and trim detail before anything is opened, and we agree on what happens if the bay turns out to be occupied — you see the options and the cost difference before we spend your money on either one.

Then the wall is opened and verified, framed and blocked, waterproofed, and left alone to cure. Rushing membrane cure is the most common way a good detail gets ruined. Tile goes in with the field tile so the layout lines actually work. Grout, silicone at the corners, cure time, then a walk-through with you at eye level in the shower where you will actually see it.

If a niche is part of a larger bathroom job, it gets sequenced with the rest of the tile rather than treated as an add-on afterward.

What moves the price

The single biggest swing is whether the stud bay is clear. Relocating a vent stack, a supply line, or a drain that happens to sit exactly where you want the niche turns a tile detail into a plumbing scope, and in a slab-on-grade house that can mean rerouting overhead through the attic. That is a real conversation, not a surprise we spring on you mid-job.

After that: size and count, since two niches or a full-height column is more framing, more waterproofing, and more cuts. Site-built versus preformed foam units. Sill material, because a single slab cut and pitched from stone costs more than tiling the sill. Tile choice matters more than people expect — a mosaic back panel is slow, and hand-mitered porcelain edges are slower than a metal trim profile. Adding a niche to a shower that is already tiled brings demo, patching, and the real possibility that the existing tile cannot be matched. Integral lighting adds an electrical scope on top of everything above.

Common questions

Can you add a niche to a shower that is already tiled?

It is possible but it is a different job. The existing tile has to come off in that area, the waterproofing has to be cut and re-lapped correctly rather than patched over, and there is a genuine chance the original tile cannot be matched if it is discontinued. We are straight about that risk up front, because a mismatched patch around a new niche is worse than no niche.

Can a niche go on any wall in the shower?

No. The plumbing wall usually carries the mixing valve, supply lines, and sometimes the vent stack, and exterior walls are a poor choice in this climate because the niche eats the insulation depth. Interior partition walls are the easiest and the most reliable. We confirm what is in the bay by opening it rather than guessing, and we tell you before committing to a location.

What size and height actually work?

Height is usually set so the shelf sits comfortably below shoulder level for whoever uses the shower most, and the opening is sized to land on field-tile grout lines rather than splitting a course. Depth is limited by the stud wall itself. Two smaller niches often work better than one tall one, especially in a shared shower where two people want their own bottles.

Will a niche make the shower more likely to leak?

Only if it is built badly. A niche adds inside corners, and corners are where waterproofing gets tested. Done properly — banded corners, continuous membrane lapped onto the wall waterproofing, a sloped sill, silicone rather than grout at changes of plane — it is no more vulnerable than the rest of the shower. Done as an afterthought, it is the first thing to fail.
