Houston 77004 sits about 17 miles from our shop, and appliance garage cabinet is work we do there regularly.

Plenty of Houston kitchens already have an appliance garage. Some were built in the late 1980s and 1990s when tambour doors were common, and a fair number of those no longer roll properly. Others are builder kitchens from the 2000s where the owner wants to add one into an existing cabinet run without redoing the whole kitchen. Both are retrofit questions, and both come down to the same three checks: is the existing box square and sound, can the hardware be serviced or only replaced, and can the finish be matched. The answers are often not what people expect, so it is worth being straight about them before anything comes off the wall.

Scope of work

An assessment comes first. We check whether the carcase is still square by measuring the diagonals, because a tambour binds when the box has racked, and no amount of new hardware fixes that. We look at the back panel and the sides to see whether they are plywood or particleboard, whether the back is a thin stapled sheet, and whether there is anything solid for hardware to grip.

Then the door. A wood tambour is slats glued to a canvas or mesh backer running in routed tracks. When it jams, the causes are usually a dried-out track, a delaminated backer, slats swollen with humidity, or a loose slat catching. A rebuild means removing the tambour, stripping and re-gluing to a new backer, cleaning and waxing the tracks, and easing swollen slats.

If the box itself is failing, the honest path is replacement. That means removing the old unit, repairing the countertop and backsplash where it sat, checking what electrical was hidden behind it, and building a new box scribed to the wall. Finish matching is decided at that point, not afterwards.

What gets specified

Rebuilding a tambour means choosing what the new backer is. Canvas with a flexible adhesive is traditional and repairable. A polyester mesh backer is more stable in humidity. Either way the slats get cleaned of old glue completely, because a lumpy glue line is what catches in the track.

Tracks get waxed with paraffin or a dry lubricant, never oiled, because oil holds dust and turns into a paste that binds worse than the original problem.

Where a box is being replaced rather than repaired, prefinished plywood is the substrate that survives repeated steam. Finish matching is the hard part. A stained wood run that has had a decade of UV through a kitchen window has shifted colour, and a new door made to the original formula will read wrong. Painted runs are far easier to match, and a run that is already painted can be touched into invisibly. Where a stained match is impossible, the workable options are refacing the adjacent doors, painting the run, or making the new unit an intentional accent in a different material.

What Houston conditions demand

Humidity is why old tambours in this area fail more than they do in dry climates. Solid wood slats take on and give off moisture with the seasons, and after two decades in a Houston kitchen they can grow enough at the ends to bind in the track. The hide or contact adhesive holding slats to a canvas backer also gives up faster in a warm, humid box that gets steamed every morning.

Builder kitchens west of Highway 6 bring the other retrofit problem. Particleboard carcases with a stapled eighth-inch back will not hold a lift mechanism or a tambour track under repeated load without a plywood cleat added inside.

Flood-affected homes are their own category. Where lower cabinets were replaced after a flood event and uppers were not, the finishes already do not match, and the sensible move is often to stop chasing a match and treat the new unit as a deliberate contrast. Older inner-Houston kitchens add wiring questions behind the backsplash that need to be answered before a receptacle goes into a cabinet.

Houston housing stock

Houston is not one housing stock, so it is not one kind of remodel. In the Heights and Woodland Heights you are often working on 1910s–1930s wood-frame homes on pier-and-beam, where leveling, sill and joist repair, and original wiring long past its service life come before anything cosmetic — and where a home in a designated historic district brings design review with it. Montrose, Oak Forest and Garden Oaks add mid-century layers. Meyerland, Westbury, Braeswood and Sharpstown are largely 1950s–60s slab ranch: cast iron drains near the end of their life, galvanized supply, single-pane windows, popcorn ceilings that should be tested before they are disturbed. Memorial and Alief lean 1970s–80s, which brings aluminum branch wiring and polybutylene supply into the conversation. West of Beltway 8 you are usually in 2000s and 2010s construction, where the job is upgrade rather than repair. Houston has no zoning, but plumbing, electrical and structural work is permitted, and deed restrictions still govern a great deal.

Common mistakes

Rebuilding a tambour inside a racked box. It will bind again, and the labour is wasted. Measure the diagonals first and correct the box or replace it.

Oiling the tracks. It feels better for a week and then collects dust into a gum that jams the door.

Screwing new lift hardware into particleboard or a thin back panel. That needs a solid plywood cleat glued and screwed in, or threaded inserts, before the hardware goes anywhere near it.

Assuming the existing counter circuit can carry another appliance. In older houses the kitchen may be on fewer circuits than a modern kitchen expects, and the answer is a load check, not a guess.

Committing to a stain match on a fifteen-year-old run without a sample door made first. Match on a sample under the kitchen’s own lighting before anything is built.

Cutting the countertop to make a unit fit. On stone that is a risky cut near an edge or a seam, and it is usually cheaper to change the cabinet dimension than the counter.

Where the budget goes

Whether the existing box is reusable is the first fork, and it is usually decided by squareness and substrate rather than by cosmetics. A tambour rebuild in a sound box is a modest job. A replacement unit is a different scale of work.

Finish matching drives cost more than most people expect, particularly on stained wood, where the realistic outcomes may be a sample door, a refaced run, or a deliberate contrast. Each has a different price.

Electrical adds when there is no usable capacity: a new receptacle inside the cabinet, a load check, or a new circuit run from the panel in an older house.

Access matters too. If the countertop or backsplash has to be disturbed to remove or set a unit, that pulls in stone work and tile repair, and tile that has been on a wall for fifteen years rarely has a matching box in the garage.

The process

We start by opening and measuring the existing unit rather than quoting from a photograph, because the diagonals, the back panel and the track condition decide everything that follows. You get a straight recommendation of repair or replace with the reasoning, not just a number. If a finish match is part of it, we make a sample and look at it in your kitchen light before committing. Repairs happen in place where possible; a replacement unit gets built off site, so the kitchen is only disrupted for the removal, the electrical if any, and the set. Common questions

Do you have to remove the countertop?

Usually not. Most countertop units can be removed and set without disturbing the stone, provided the scribe and the caulk joint at the backsplash are cut cleanly first. Where a unit is being enlarged into a space the counter does not allow, changing the cabinet dimension is nearly always cheaper and safer than cutting existing stone.

Can a tambour door that jams be fixed?

Often yes, if the cabinet is still square. The usual repairs are a new backer for the slats, removing old adhesive so the run is smooth, easing slats that have swollen with humidity, and cleaning and waxing the tracks. If the box has racked out of square, repairing the door alone will not hold, and that is worth knowing before paying for it.

Will a new unit match my 2006 cabinets?

On a painted run, usually. On a stained wood run, rarely to an invisible standard, because the existing finish has shifted with age and light. We make a sample door and look at it in your kitchen before anyone commits. The realistic alternatives are refacing that section, painting the run, or making the new unit a deliberate accent.

Is repairing the old one worth it?

It depends on the carcase, not the door. A sound, square plywood box with a tired tambour is worth repairing. A racked particleboard box with a swollen bottom edge is not, because whatever goes into it will bind again. The assessment is quick and it is the honest way to answer the question.
